This is not certified refurbished, is third party refurbished so make sure you check battery cycle. Bought one yesterday but thr 512gb for $799. Came clean like new but it looks like it was used with some finger print etc. battery cycle 6. No apple warranty.

Returning it today since i got a better deal on a windows laptop. Window works better for me for my usecases.

Edit: when buying a refurbished apple device from microcenter make sure it says "certified refurbished". Meaning it comes straight from apple "lnew condition" sealed apple box with 1 year warranty.

Refurbished only 90 days warranty and refurbished by a third party used

Even as someone who likes apple products, their pricing on ram and storage is obviously absurd

I bought a new M1 MacBook with 8GB/256GB around $700 since 2020 for my teenager. Have been waiting for a Macbook with 16GB/512GB for the past 2 years, but always over my budget.
I really dislike the way Apple sell their products, charging $200 extra to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB, and then another $200 to bump up from 256GB to 512GB. Frown

I have two kids in college and each has an 8GB MacBook Air with the M1. Neither has ever complained once about problems.

You say that 8gb is enough on Apple Silicon, but how is it different on things like browser tabs. I need a laptop for my wife, a realtor, and she ALWAYS has dozens and dozens of tabs open that really made her hate the last Macbook Air she had (like 6 years ago)
Looking for advice, not complaining.
I always have like 8 open and its fine. Just opened 15 more all FB marketplace and I don't notice any appreciable difference in speed or responsiveness. And this is in Chrome on M1 with Parsec, Messages, Discord etc running in the background too. Safari is supposed to be better with RAM. Activity monitor at 7gb used. YMMV but I don't see how you can bog these down just with websites and consuming content and even a little more than that which is what I am considering the vast majority of users.

Mac has swap. Obviously no replacement for actual RAM, but is the only way 8gb will last for heavy usage.

Just grab one from Wally World. I got my daughter one last month. Sold and shipped from Wally. Her old one Apple wanted to charge me 500 for screen replacement.

Grabbed one from my local store for pickup. I know the 8gb of RAM will limit it, but for this price it seems kind of a no-brainer
nah, i have first M1 8GB and its been using like 12gb of swap RAM since day 1 with zero issues.

Debating on this.
The closest location is 50 miles away and in California gas is still close to $5/gallon.
I recently bought a Lenovo laptop from Costco after having MacBooks for a decade and getting used to it is so weird.
I really want to go back to Mac.
Buy an EV

Do your wife and yourself a favor and get the 16gb ram. Storage is debatable but RAM is not. You will be future proofing it by spending extra $ on RAM.

Gonna wait to see what ARM chips bring on Windows laptop. According to early reviews, the battery life and performance is great. I hope it pushes Apple to up the base RAM to at least 12GB. I tend to keep my laptops for at least 5-7 years, and have never owned a laptop with less than 12gb of memory. This is the main drawback of MacBooks with M-series chips.

8gb ram is not acceptable in 2024, even with this price, 8gb MacBook is like a 13" iPad: productivity is limited. I'd rather get a m1 iPad Pro if I don't do productivity work

I'd rather spending $999 to buy a brand new M3 Air and get $150 GC at apple store maybe one month later. The total cost with discounted GC is ($999-$150) * (100/110) = $771, much better deal than this.

Just picked up one. Battery cycle is 12. Max capacity 100%. Other than that, I can't tell if it's new or refurb. Got a 3yr Micro Center warranty for $149.99 as well. $699 + $150 with 5% MC credit card discount. Not bad.
