Just purchased a DS224+ yesterday. The DS923+ shown here is a bargain and pretty tempting.

For anyone wondering
The final 2 numbers in their model is the year they came out.

"j" is the budget model
A few others in between
+ Is above the rest of their line with the exception of
Xs = Synology top of the line

Just get any NAS and a cheap Intel mini-PC to actually run Plex. The N100 units are like $150 and can easily transcode multiple 4K streams. Let your NAS just handle file storage.

If you're looking for a NAS for Plex and need transcoding, this isn't it.
If not, it's a good deal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The processor in the Synology "+" models are more than enough to use for transcoding.
You're thinking of the models with ARM processors which are barely functional.

I think they meant since they switched from intel cpus, which have quicksync that allows 15+ streams at once due to hardware decoding, to amd cpus, which does not have a quicksync variant and thus all transcoding is done via cpu and these cpus will only handle a couple at a time. As far as I'm aware, amd does not have a quicksync equivalent

The pass mark for this cpu is around 5500

Here is the official plex transcoding requirement.

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark score requirements are a good guideline for the following average source file:
4K HDR (50Mbps, 10-bit HEVC) file: 17000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
4K SDR (40Mbps, 8-bit HEVC) file: 12000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
1080p (10Mbps, H.264) file: 2000 PassMark score
720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score

I want to build a NAS for home storage and save photos clips family but not in a hurry. Would this price better in like July 4th or BF? Thank you.
Also following & in the same boat... Been wanting to build an affordable NAS for a while if anyone has recommendations. $500+ without drives seems silly to me.

I doubt you'll see a 4bay for anything less than 400. Additionally drives will easily cost 100-300 per drive for any decent amount.

That's the market unfortunately and it doesn't seem to be a good for people like us who just want to start pictures and video or back up. Most people by this for their pirated -ahem- ripped bluray collection, so it might be worth for them not to have to deal with streaming services that could be expensive, they just use Plex on these.

We got some other great responses for photo storage, check those out including immich.

I also read about you can also build your own using Raspberry Pi

Oh, wow, I wasn't aware of that. My Synology has an Intel processor.
So interesting AMD left out that important QuickSync feature.

The model I was initially interested in is the DS1522+. After comparing, it seems that the difference with the DS923+ is not that significant. The main difference appears to be the 4-Bay versus 5-Bay. I was wondering if there are any other major differences. Thanks!
1522+ has double memory and better for RAID6 as one more drive will give you 30% more total space.

Depending on what you plan to do with a NAS, ... if you are HOME USER, you might want to look into cheap DAS.

My advice if you're tech savvy: Get a Dell refurb with the specs you want and install "Xpenology" which is basically just DSM. It's way cheaper and you get to pick the hardware you want. I've been running it for around 5-6 years with no issues and have a full Windows 10 VM running on mine.
Thanks for the tips. My only concern is ease of access from mobile device. All the synology apps makes it easy for me to upload/view all my files. How does something like truenas or Xpenology handle mobile devices?

720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score
Do you know what the passmark score is for the AMD powered Synologys?

I personally don't understand why it is a problem since plex works just fine for me on my DS1821+. Maybe it's because I'm only running 1 to 2 streams at once?

NewEgg had a 4 bay on sale for $180 or so last week. It's not common but possible to find for less than $400 if you keep your eye out.

Any Plex users who is looking for hardware transcoding,
- DS224+, QNAP TS-462 etc. support hardware transcoding. Below is the famous link for more details.

https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...1274624273

- Also you need Plex Pass to get advantage of hardware transcoding. It is not supported for free Plex users.

- For those who are wondering about why we need "hardware transcoding" then in simple explanation - you need it while running movies/videos from your plex server to iphone/ipad (or while out of your home network and running on low internet speed).
If you are watching movies at your home in its original form and your TV supports that then you don't need hardware transcoding.
