How does it compare to the RG35XX in terms of performance and display?

edit: Nevermind, just noticed that it has the same chip, but a smaller display. 3.5" is small enough for me, so any smaller than that would be too small.

This one offers better performance than the original 2023 model of the RG35XX (in case that's the model you have). The 2023 model pretty much topped out at solid PS1 emulation.

Anbernic put out what they named the 'New RG35XX' in 2024 that's mostly identical to the 2023 model but has the faster H700 chipset that's in this RG28XX (as well as the RG35XX H, RG35XX Plus, and RG35XXSP).

You'd be looking at really solid PS1 and below emulation. It can do Nintendo DS emulation pretty well, but the main barrier (not really this device's fault) is keeping it limited to DS games that didn't require a bunch of touchscreen interaction (given this device doesn't have one & must simulate it) or didn't require the use of both screens simultaneously (i.e. Contra 4). If it's a game you can get by playing on a single screen or with minimal switching back and forth between the top and bottom screens (like Final Fantasy III 3D remake), those are the sweet spot for DS on a device like this & it can handle many/most of those games.

You'll also be able to emulate ~some~ of the Dreamcast, N64, and PSP libraries. A limited amount; although probably more than you might expect (or even -want- to play on a device w/ a 2.83" display). Just think of any games it can play from those systems as more of a pleasant bonus, rather than the focus of this device. PSP is the most limited in terms of selection, but you'll find some pretty good games that do work very well (Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X). It's best to go in not expecting that heavy titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus will run well. PSP is also natively in 16:9 aspect ratio, so you'll have some letterboxing (something to bear in mind on a 4:3 display that's this small). It's doable if you have the eyesight for it, but can get "squinty." Also, no analog stick(s) will further trim down the selection of playable games for the ones that can't be played without it/them.

local as in, two on one console? I know it has an HDMI out, but I don't think you can get two controllers hooked up to this bad boy unless the usb C charging port supports a USB C dock

Also I have one of these, its pretty cool as a dinky little pocket device. I was provided a review unit and I like it, build quality feels reel good. However, I wouldn't pay more then $38 for it. Mine was given to me through an amazon vendor who charges $60+ for it and at that price I wouldn't be thrilled with it.

Performance is great, its just so dang small that the way I see it, this is a device for people looking for something SMALL and very portable FIRST and comfort second.

Yes. There's no bluetooth, but you can connect additional controllers via the USB-C port.

People don't realize that if you have a samsung s21 or newer android phone for that matter you can emulate pretty much any retro games all the way to Nintendo switch and cloud bases gaming on your phone
People realize this, but these products are designed for people who want a standalone device for retro games. My galaxy tab can handle PS2 games, but it's not portable. My phone can also play games better, but then I have to put a grip on to use it as a handheld. These products are for those who want a device dedicated to just games and a more nostalgic sort of device.

I think it's more about the form factor nostalgia fun times more than actual emulating power.

The cost difference is also a factor... If I let my kids use this and it gets smashed the 2nd day, I won't be too sad.
