Update 2: I found less expensive replacement filter cartridges that work without modification. It seems the cartridges might work on a timer basis with replacement about every 3 or 4 months as indicated by the unit lights. The replacement filter was down to 1/4 as per light indicator. I pushed the reset button for about 5 seconds and the light indicator is now reading like it was new. I will monitor the operation thru dust accumulation on furniture. If I lived in a very active home, I could understand the fast depletion of the cartridge. That is not the case. I am wondering if most manufacturers of household units and their cartridges also work on the timer basis per operational hours and not actual air quality? I guess this is a question for manufacturers of both the unit and cartridges. I saved the original filter and wonder if the same will happen
UPDATE: My house is not high traffic and I only have 1 small dog that does not shed. I do the regular, not over the top vacuuming of the floor and furniture. I have not done any frying or heavy cooking. The filter is only 2 months old and is down to one quarter of life left. Knowing that an air filter is just a fan and filter, my next purchase will be a less expensive brand with cheaper and maybe universal type filter. I have noticed less dust on the furniture and electronics (dust magnets!) but think smaller units, with strategic placement might do the job as well. I still compliment the manufacturer for making a good product, but filter cartridge life is no where near what is advertised.
I purchased the smart model, my dumb move as it was impossible to pair with my Android phone even after Customer service and I tried every workaround. I was refunded the difference in price. The customer service was honest in telling me there was no difference in the units. I have been running it on Auto since my purchase about a month ago. I hesitated reviewing until I saw if it made a difference in dust and if it actually covered the square footage as advertised. It has made a difference in dust and helps eliminate cooking odors that linger. It is very quiet even on high fan. The indicator seems to be accurate turning from green to yellow to red as air quality diminishes and changes back to green. You can notice the difference in the air smells. Since the coverage area in less than stated, I will be purchasing another to put in the larger master bedroom. Bottom line, don't look for miracles. Make sure you dust and vacuum before your initial startup. Unfortunately it won't suck the dust off or out of furniture; you have to do that yourself. Since I'm purchasing another, that's testimony enough to the fact that this air purifier does help. The filter cartridges are not expensive and seem to last. Remember, as in all air purifiers, they are just fans and filters.

A box fan isn't going to be quieter than a dedicated air purifier. The Corsi-Rosenthal boxes (box fan with cube of filters) work very well because they remove more particulate because of the amount of surface area. But that DIY design is mainly for emergency situations for people in wildfire areas who have smoke air pollution and can't evacuate.
A dedicated air purifier is better for every day use. Besides the fact that it isn't unsightly like having 4 filters taped to a box fan, air purifiers also have ionizers and charcoal filters for removing bad smells. They also often have automatically adjusting fan speed based on air quality.
So yeah, the DIY "cube of furnace filters" work well, but they are mainly used in situations where you are experiencing extreme air pollution and you wouldn't mind running the ugly massive duct taped monstrosity because you need to clean a LOT of heavily polluted air.
Some of us have the money to afford to not have to ghetto bootleg our box fans. My Winix also automatically decreases/increases fan speed based on the environment and let's me know when I should change the filters.

Description and reviews say that non OEM filters do not work. OEM filters are $30 or less if purchased in higher quantities.

I ordered. I plan to try these filters, which seem to be mostly positive reviews regarding compatibility with this air purifier, and at least a few of the reviews sound like someone legitimately wrote them. It also sounds like (based on one review) that the MSA3 was revised at some point to change the holder which makes some units not compatible with the filters. https://www.amazon.com/CINETURE-R...09YJ3379D/

UPDATE: I wrote the seller and they sent - at no extra charge - new filter elements that work fine. The MSA3 had been updated, apparently to prevent installing the filter element backside-forward, and the replacements I'd ordered were for the previous version. (I also note you can remove magnets from a used filter and tape one on the sensor to use the older version of the filter element. I forgot to know that ahead of time.)
I'm not sure what else is wrong, but the MSA3 Air Purifier for Home will not turn on when trying to use one of these filters. At first I'd thought it was the lack of the 20x10mm neoprene strip around the outside (on the filter that came with the MSA3 but not on these) but I bought some of that and these still do not work. I'd bought these filters when I bought the MSA3, figuring to have replacements on-hand when it came time to change them out, so of course it's past the return date before learning these do not work.
Again, these do not work - the MSA3 will not turn on nor respond to any button press with one of these filters inside. Save yourself the $35 - yes, cheaper than those from the MSA3 manufaturer, but it's still wasted money when these don't work.

FYI, all HEPA air filters are largely a scam. Not enough air is moved.
One of the "boxes" that have filters on 4 sides and a large fan similar to a box fan on top... They filter something like 5x better. And they're cheaper to run. And quieter.
I am someone who lives with a German Shepherd that I am allergic to. Pet dander. I can feel it as soon as I walk into the house. There's a discernible difference in my respiratory system compared to breathing inside my house vs outside my house. I have several air purifiers. I also use N95 masks at times.
All an air purifier does is move gas / wind through the filter, grab the allergens, and spit the air out. They do work.

Is this better then the costco purifiers? I have 1 of those in the living room and 1 in the bedroom. What I'm trying to do is keep.one in the kitchen to filter out the food smell when cooking.
1. Buy a box fan ($20)
2. Tape a hepa hvac filter over it ($15)
(That's literally all these machines are.)
3. Save a ton of money right off the bat and even more over time.
Yup. Use the aluminum foil duct sealing tape. Works great

There's even a better square box design you could make if you like. I did it for a while.
The issue for me is that my box fan was loud AF even on the lowest setting. It didn't sense allergens and so of course had to be run 24/7. And it was a bit unsightly. The dedicated purifiers are silent. I would definitely invest in a high quality 20" near-silent box fan if you do this.
