I have a Les Paul Special in red with P-90's. I love it. It's one of my favorites. I bought it a while ago, before covid, before inflation. I got it on sale for $99. After having it for a bit, I decided to make a few improvements, none of which were really necessary but was fun to do and definitely did make a difference. I went on Amazon and bought new locking tuners, Had to use a reamer to make the holes a bit bigger, but that was simple enough. I replaced the stock wraparound bridge with something that had a little better intonation, and maybe a couple of other things just for shits and giggles, but these are solid guitars for beginners or really anyone or even just as a 2nd, 3rd beater guitar or just whatever. If you can find a one "used" for less money that's great, but this is a fair price for what I think are good guitars.

Just in case anyone is interested in what locking tuners I bought on Amazon:

Musiclily Pro 3x3 Guitar Locking Tuners String Tuning Pegs Keys Machine Heads Set for Les Paul Style Electric or Acoustic Guitar, Gold

The reamer I bought to make the tuning peg holes wider :

Taper Pin Reamers, 5-16mm Bridge Pin Hole Hand Held Reamer T Handle Tapered 6 Fluted Chamfer Reaming Woodworker Cutting Tool

The Bridge I bought :

Musiclily Pro 52.5mm (2-1/16 inch) String Spacing Tune-o-matic Pigtail Style Adjustable Wraparound Bridge Tailpiece for Epiphone Les Paul SG Style Electric Guitar, Gold
I already have one in Pelham Blue and it's very rare to find these used for under $150. It's an excellent value to get one new at this price.

It's a great starter guitar or even first humbucker if coming from single coil Strats or Teles and their knockoffs. I've moved up to a nicer SG from here, but I still knock this one around now and then. I'll probably sell it for nearly what I paid, or gift it to a new player soon.

The fretboard is some sort of composite material that feels smooth and even. Mine shows faint, barely visible wear after much use. Other than bucking the tradition of using wood there, this is a great and practical solution at lower cost.

The wraparound bridge is compensated, like an acoustic bridge but more so, so it'll be just fine as long as you don't change the gauge of strings too much from stock.

Like any other starter guitar, you're likely to develop a taste and desire for more. It's a nice moddable platform, or you can move up to another guitar. You'll lose hardly any money at all for your time with this model.

I strongly recommend this guitar at this price, unless you have a specific reason to buy something nicer.

has clipped headstock, so it's a old model.

I have a LP special ii and it is surprisingly good.....except the machine heads. They had to be replaced. Mahogany body and neck, solid construction, great mod platform as well.

If the special i is close to the special ii, it will be a really fun guitar.

I got the ebony one for $150 from guitar center for Memorial Day and it's pretty good. It's not the best feeling compared to more premium models but it gets good sound/tone, and the frets were even for me. Even the stock strings were decent. I felt like I got my moneys worth for sure at $150 and it has the SG sound.

Can you show me a $150 guitar that isn't?

I think it's good to note that this budget SG has a bolt-on neck as traditional SGs are set necks.
That being said, $5k custom shop fender guitars also have Bolt-on necks.
