Run away from this model and the 5410.

There are other good opportunities at Dell Refurbished (FedEx Recycling), but these two aren't among them. I've bought many from FedEx.

The cooling on the 5411 is terrible. Check the Dell Community and Reddit. They basically took the 5410 and tried to put out a faster/better 5410, but made the cooling worse.

Check the underside slots.

You'll likely be the 3rd/4th owner. Whatever companies/govt offices used these did not treat them well. Plus, the tech is 4-5 years old now.

Buy another refurbished model, or buy a new Inspiron for $259-$399.

Some govts/corporates bought huge quantities of the 5411 and then shipped them back to Dell after. The only cooling solution is to set it to frequently cool which brings your processing power down to the absolutely minimum - along with noisy fans.

Avoid the 5410 and 5411 models.

What is a decent Latitude model to buy refurbished? I've been waiting for at least a 12th gen i7 Latitude to go on sale but I've never seen one. I heard the Latitude line is better built than Precision or Inspiron.

I just picked up a 5411 for ~$125 shipped off fleabay. Yes, it runs exceedingly warm (and, mine is the i5 no dGPU).

Layout and build quality otherwise, seems fine. Decent expansion internally, just too little heat sinking.

I own this laptop but the 1080p and I7 variant. Yes it runs hot sometimes but I use it mainly as a desktop replacement (typing on it as we speak) hooked to an ultrawide. The fan does ramp up to being loud at times but its only maybe 5% of the time and only under load but I haven't experienced any thermal throttling and when I do I will re-thermal paste the CPU. I would pass on this deal not because of the model or price but because of the screen resolution. Even with a 14 inch you really want 1080p minimum nowadays.

I would point out that many other Latitude series also had similar cooling issues (7490 comes to mind). I would also argue that many macbooks have similar cooling issues especially the ones with intel chips in them. It's just hard to have a small form factor with a hot chip and it not have some cooling downsides.

I would rather buy one of these used Latitudes then buy an Inspiron any day of the week. The Latitudes were built for business and made to last many years in an everyday environment. The driver support is better, the build quality better, and the latitudes are easily serviceable and parts can be found easily vs Inspiron series laptops.

Laptops like these are usually on 3, maybe 4 year lease cycles. It'll be rare to find refurbs for newer models before that timeframe

So FedEx recycling store you are referring to is the same store as Dell Refurbished? Or some other site?

Do note that the Intel 10th gen Core processors (i#-10###U and H, code name Comet Lake) do not support AV1 hardware decoding. Lately, YouTube has been randomly pushing AV1 (instead of VP9) 1080p videos to my laptop even though they knows it has no AV1 hardware decode, moderately increasing CPU/power usage, and temperature/fan speed (and it would cause my old Haswell laptop to drop frames and really spin up the fan). It's no big deal on my plugged-in Lenovo IdeaPad which has OK cooling but these Dell Latitudes have known overheating problem. Netflix also uses AV1 and I heard Twitch is/will pushing it as well.

The 11~14th gen Core CPU (Tiger Lake i#-11##U/H and up) has AV1 decoding. The Dell Latitude 5420 uses Tiger Lake-U. Current stock start at $240 after coupon though specs are weaker (8GB/256GB) and there are design changes: the Trackpoint is gone and the touchpad buttons are now integrated (clickpad).

On the AMD side, the Zen 3+ (Rembrandt), Zen 4 and Zen 2+ (Mendocino) have AV1 decode.
