HGST Ultrastar HC520 12TB HARD DRIVE -HUH721212ALE601 delivers the world's first hermetically sealed, helium hard drive, the Ultrastar® He10 for massive scale-out environments. Why does helium make a diference? Helium has only one-seventh the density of air. Replacing air with helium inside a hard drive dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks, cuts power consumption and results in a lower temperature within the disk drive.
The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows WD / HGST to deliver a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. In addition to being the world's first helium-filled hard drive, HGST Ultrastar He6 is also the first hard drive in the industry to o er a 14-terabyte capacity. This design provides a 50% capacity gain and still reduces the energy needed to run the drive by up to 23%.

Was just about to post this when it showed me your posting. Nice deal! Ordered a couple for my new Ugreen NAS that I got on the kickstarter. Very solid deal with 5 year warranty and a nice price per TB.

The irony of it for me is I prefer seagate despite all the negative attention. It seems rather trendy the opposition they recieve but I have yet to experience a failure that wasn't imminent or premature.

I've been waiting for the 16tb x20 or newer drives to come back. As far as recert/used drives go, these HGST drives just have too many years on them and are louder with frequent clacking in relation to their Seagate counterparts. I'd rather pay a bit more for a drive dated a couple years old. However, If I needed storage now I'd purchase these. Nice deal indeed for the price per TB.

Same, I've been waiting for this deal to return to get a couple for my UGREEN NAS 4-bay.

HC550 HC560 and Exos X22 are the drives to buy, far less mileage on them. There's a reason those continue to sell out everywhere and these older HC520s do not.

They've been even cheaper at $80 recently. I got another one for like $75 with some ebay coupon a few months ago.

The 12TB drives I received had 3.5 years of use. Isn't HC550 four years old? They probably have similar mileage.

Chase has a current 5% cashback offer for Ebay on some of their credit cards, dropping price to ~$78.

I think the 550 is a refresh of the 20 with double the buffer. The 560s are 2022 drives.

There's also been Exos X24 drives 16tb for $160 that had less than a year on them last time they were in stock. Not sure if it was serverpart or goharddrive but their disclaimer said they were AWS drives.

With a backup, which you should have anyway, this is a good deal.

Not sure if they had the PSID on the HDD label (to erase SED for NAS). I order the 10TB from the same seller and it does not have the PSID. Contacted the seller and they told me to return.

While I don't disagree with your sentiment, one could argue the reason these drives are more readily available is because there's a larger supply of them.

Are you certain? In the drive pictured, I believe it's the 20-digit string below the barcode and "12TB." It's not always apparent that it's the PSID.

FYI, the ultrastars all make a clicking noise every 3-5 seconds. So… if you have an array it's going to be click x number of hard drives every 3-5 seconds. In a quiet room… it can be heard throughout the room. Kinda like having multiple leaking faucets.

I have five of these in a DAS on a desk sitting three feet away from my head and I don't even notice the clicking. An enclosure muffles the sound to where it's not an issue.
