Just ordered one thanks. Was eyeing the central machinery one from harbor freight. Hope this one is better than that.

They probably all come from the same factory.

Depends which one. The Rockwell have a stronger mother and better RPM then the $90 Central Machinery.

But the $300 Central Machinery one is more powerful, has a bigger belt/disc and comes with its own stand

I've had a similar unit from Wen for years. Works really well for hobby stuff. Dust collection isn't great. The stamped aluminum table and plastic knobs don't hold the table square to the sanding disc for more than a minute. So just be aware.

Yeah. I learned that too just now. I saw that this Rockwell sander was sold under the Worx 3rd party seller on WM. So I figured they got bought out by Worx parent company and they did, which is Positec.

Den of tools recently posted a video showing how this product from about 10 different brands is basically the same thing. The cheapest then was Wen for 100., so at least you are still saving 20., so I bought one.

Showing my age but I went to a Rockwell plant in Columbus, Ohio to see them machine bulkheads for the space shuttle. You have to check out all of these products now to see if these old brand names mean anything!

Agreed, the design looks identical to my "scratch and dent" Ryobi sander that I got from Direct tools outlet about 4 years ago. I think I paid $70 shipped, but that was back in the day when they actually had great online sales and sometimes free shipping. If this Rockwell is indeed a clone of the Ryobi or Wen it's a great sander for $85, I know there are much better belt/disc sanders out there, but I doubt you'll ever find one for under $100 unless you score a sweet garage sale find.

Reviews seem to be hit or miss. Could be a dead weight after a few years.

That's my thought. I have a WEN 5 inch disc sander and 1 inch belt combo. I was debating about upgrading to this but between the belt issues and shipping problems, I decided to pass. Great deal though, only $10 more than the combo I bought

The same with so many proud American brands that used to be associated with good quality. One could buy with confidence. Not anymore.

Gross trade imbalances have consequences.

It'd be really great if it were even *possible* to buy US-made power tools, or even made just about anywhere but PRC.

As it is, if I were buying a benchtop belt/disc sander, I'd probably go for a Bucktool BD4801 (currently $189 on Amazon). Along with a better overall build quality, it's one of the few with a table that isn't laughably flawed, and it's direct drive, which makes for significantly better efficiency.

That said, I'm still using the belt sander add-on tool and 12" disc sander on my shopsmith, and it blows away anything else I've used. Not coincidentally, all made in the USA.

Very, very, very handy tool. So much better than attempting to clamp the belt sander upside down on the workbench. I use it almost every day to do fine adjustments to house improvement tasks.
