If you are close to a Harbor Frieght, a sharpening stone usually goes on sale for 1.99. Sometimes they have coupons for free a sharpening stone.
They have the same ones at the dollar store. I've used them for chip repairs and restorations, but they are way too coarse for sharpening kitchen knives. Probably meant for things that don't need to actually be sharp sharp like axes, hoes, and such.
