It's very dependent on you specific room layout and needs, but assuming you can correctly position the 4 height speakers to match Dolby's recommendations, I think most people would say that 5.1.4 is preferred over 7.1.2 for Atmos content. Basically 7.1.x is marginally better than 5.1.x, but x.1.4 is significantly better than x.1.2.

Would this be a significant upgrade over my sony str dn1080 besides going from 7.2 to the 9.2?

Onkyo forever burned their reputation with their crap HDMI handshake issues. Garbage brand.

Back in November/December Adorama was running a sale on a Denon receiver. I think it was model s970h. Does anyone know if this onkyo is as good or should i wait till the Denon goes on sale again?

You don't need that much power. You don't want that much power.

Stay AWAY, FAR AWAY, from ONKYO & their "sometimes" HDMI AUDIO "handshake", IF you enjoy actual SOUND from your system & not just the "pretty" dial lighting.

Cheap crap ( ONKYO ) portrayed as good stuff.
Have two Onkyo 7100 and 6050, no handshake issue.

Why didn't you just buy a brand new Denon X1800h for $426 from Amazon about a week or so ago?

Is this overkill to use for my deck speakers (2). Right now I have a very old HK receiver being controlled by Harmony and an echo dot. I have to use harmony app to turn on, then I can stream music to it via my echo dot. I also have an old Chromecast audio connected to it but use the echo more.
Probably but why do you even need to replace it if it works fine? Seems a good use of an old receiver.

Whats audiophiles recommending these days? -
4 ceiling speakers or
2 ceiling and use the other 2 for side/back
4 for 5.1.4 is very preferable for a proper Atmos setup.

Depends on which features you need. Do you need modern HDMI features? If so get a modern featured AVR. This isn't it but some may not care for what they are using it for.

Is this the best Airplay2 receiver under $400 for someone who only needs 2.1?

I upgraded from TX-NR686 and it seems the sound quality is different and improved. I had to readjust my subwoofers a bit. It's nice seeing the video quality listed in the receiver itself. Using my old receiver, it would pass through HDR content and the display would show HDR confirmation, but now the receiver itself says HDR10 when in use and when checking using the audio/video info button. I like how the volume has twice the number of steps for finer control. I mainly got this so I could add height speakers. I like the new remote design too. I'm curious to try out the 4k upscaling (if the source output is 1080p). There are a lot more features I could try out but I'm so far not doing any equalization, but I'm not sure if that affects the sound quality but I like the idea of not altering movie audio. If it doesn't detract from the audio transparency and would increase soundstage, I would like to try the manual AccuEQ. It allows for adjusting for standing waves too, which is not something I should possibly brush up on, but it sounds so great I don't want to ruin it.

Most other 9.2 AVR's are $700+ on sale. Why is this one significantly lower? will it sound like crap vs a $700 receiver using same speakers?

I could careless abou the GUI gimicky stuff. I just want hdmi audio
