Some of the places out West, their burritos are nothing more than the Roti and Naan bread I grew up with. The places out east haven't figured it out yet to my knowledge. It's so much better than the usual burrito shells they make.
I'm not surprised that they are struggling.
I have the free sip club and whenever I go in I notice several empty tables with dirty dishes on them (and there isn't a lack of employees present).
And on top that their coffee sucks.
I feel kind of bad to complain since I'm getting it for free but it's weak and flavorless.
I remember Panera being a great lunch spot in the early 2000s but it's definitely changed.
That's unfortunate to hear, but FWIW the coffee at my local Panera is quite good (imo better than a lot of drip coffee at other places) and it's always clean when I go in. I never sit down though, just sip club coffee and maybe a sandwich once in a while.

People's perceptions are too easily formed by social media these days. I can still get a chicken burrito with all the free stuff for $10 out the door, fast, at chipotle. Local restaurants with similar menus are MORE expensive and have less healthy ingredients. And frankly, most local places are not only going up on menu prices, but their portions and ingredients have degraded over the last 4 years. Just because it's not a chain doesn't mean it's automatically better, and many times it actually means it's worse.
