I'm looking to buy this to use with a RPi as a NAS. I currently have a 5tb portable drive, but this would be a nice upgrade. Is this a good idea? I hear some bad things with using drives over USB.

You need a powered dock and perhaps cooling solution, or just a premade enclosure which is less trouble because a jerry rigged solution doesn' t save much at all.

I went with a MediaSonic 4bay RAID box. Granted I hooked it to an N100 mini-PC as RPis have constrained bandwidth on the USB bus. Works well for my NAS/Plex/Media server.

Last year it was possible to get the 14TB refurbs down to around $93 with a refurb coupon. I'm hoping that happens again.

Looks like MediaSonic has a few different 4 bay raid enclosures, anything to look for in particular for this use case?

Just received the same drive from this seller at a bit higher price. One of my concerns was noise, and this drive is quiet - more so than expected. Very pleased with it.

The drive was packaged well and includes a SATA power disable mode adapter cable along with instructions.

My invoice says HF2-SU3S3 but I don't see that model on the listing anymore. It was USB 3.0 + eSata (I use USB) w/ support up to 18tb per drive.

They have hardware RAID but I run software RAID via Unraid so I can't speak to that personally. I did read reviews on /r/DataHoarder and a lot of people have no issues using hardware RAID.

tempting, but 5yrs in data center is a bit too much for me.

Would want to buy minimum 4 for a 2-bay I have... 1 hot spare plus another spare for yearly backup to offsite storage (SD Box)
