Don't see that price and it is 6/26 today. The ad actually says 6/27 to 7/1.

Royal Oak has performed better for me than Kingsford.

Never had a problem with it staying lit throughout the cook

Their lump charcoal is the worst. Cheapest price most of the time, but quality is horrible. Hoping this is better, otherwise I'd say check out cowboy briquettes at Walmart, under $20 for 2 17ish pound bags. Great quality!

It takes some time to heat up, but what I remember is that it stays hot longer. Kingsford gets really hot initially and burns up quick

Fogo is the best that I've used--get the brown bag and it comes with HUGE chunks of charcoal.

Otherwise, using Kingsford and a chimney has been great for me.

Don't get anything flavored like "hickory". Start with just regular kingsford in the blue bag, or some good all natural lump charcoal from a bbq supply store. Hog heaven is my preferred lump but I understand it's not available everywhere. If you don't have one yet, make sure you get yourself a chimney starter, and make sure your coals are white/ashes over before dumping them in the grill. You don't necessarily want charcoal smoke on your food. If you want smoke, get some hardwood chunks to add to your charcoal like hickory or post oak.
And specifically with steaks, depending on the cut you're likely going to want to reverse sear until you get dialed in and used to what you're going. Lots of Weber kettle grill reverse sear videos out there on YouTube.

Do you mean a lighter fluid smell? Did you use instant light briquettes or lighter fluid? If you put your steak on before that stuff burns off it will impart a flavor for sure. I recommend using a chimney starter to light the coals
