Ganzo Firebird. IMHO, the Ganzo Firebird line of folders with D2 semi-stainless tool steel [amazon.com] blades and G10 scales are about the best deal in pocket knives on the market for at least several years now. Right around $25 is the sweet spot for a knife like the FH-41 [amazon.com], which I've owned for years and absolutely love. Ganzo Firebird has a wide variety of knives they build at great prices and if you need fully stainless you can get one of the 440c models for usually <$20. [amazon.com] I don't see them go on sale very often because they are already darn good bargains.

Ganzo Firebird is known for making clones of other knife designs, but don't confuse them with scam companies that counterfeit other brands logos and trademarks to fool customers into buying their crummy junk. Ganzo proudly puts their name and logo on all their knives.

Yes, these knives are made in China. If you hate China then I can't help you. I'm not their biggest fan either. But the fact is these are fantastic knives with quality steel that has been tested by youtubers like Luvthemknives [youtube.com] to be the real deal with very good heat treatments. Some of the Ganzo D2 tested at 62HRC+, which is great for an EDC blade. Their build quality is excellent, the action on their manual flippers are superb, good grinds on the blades, and dollar for dollar I don't know of a better knife brand. Look up any Ganzo you are interested in on YouTube where you will likely find overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Sorry, if this sounds familiar, but I recommend Ganzo Firebird a lot in various knife forums when the question comes up about quality EDC folders at a good price. I'm not affiliated with Ganzo, but a big fan. I was a big Kershaw fan when I first got into collecting budget knives, but found Ganzo after searching for manual flippers with smoother actions. I still like Kershaw and own a bunch of them, but I think they use the Speedsafe assisted opening to cover for otherwise mediocre actions.

There are a lot of other quality budget knives, but GOOD D2 for $25 and GOOD 440c for under $20, in a really well built knife, is hard to find unless you run into a really good sale. Of which there have been many lately. The Kizer sales floating around the last two months have been crazy, IMHO. If you catch an Ontario Rat I or 2 for <$30, or a grab a QSP Penguin or Parrot, you will be happy. Civivi, CJRB, Kizer, CKRT are some great budget brands, but expect a slight jump in price past the Ganzos. Here is a good video of budget options from Metal Complex [youtube.com] on YouTube. You can always drop down to the $10 knife range and go for a Smith & Wesson, a Sanrenmu knife in 8cr13Mov for that 3 for $22 deal that seems always be running, or a Kershaw gift pack in very low end 3Cr13, or pick up an $5 Ozark Trail knife at Wally, but if you spend a bit more you can get a much nicer knife with a Ganzo. Anyone who calls them cheap Chinese garbage has likely never even held one.

And, yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, my opinion, man Peace

Just wondering about this knife, I know people have said these are junk, but it seems pretty decent with d2 steel and g10 handle. Is there something about it that makes it junk? Just a terrible brand?

So what's like a knife the nihilists should believe in? Serious answers only.

Not really. You just have to understand that Remington doesn't make these. They are produced for the lowest bid by a factory in China that may or may not have the best quality control, or give their steels a good heat treatment. The $70 list price is a joke, but for $23 it's an okay deal. The blade is only 3", so it's a little small, but it does have a good looking leather sheath, rather than a cheap nylon one. D2 is one of the harder steels, but you won't see a lot of hard use knives made in that steel because it is easy to chip. But a lot depends on the heat treatment, and how hard they decided to temper it to. It's got a full tang which means the blade and inside handle is the full length and width of the handle, so it looks build pretty though. If you like the style of this knife then go for it. It's not junk, but it's only worth about the $23 it's "on sale" for.

You can spend around $10 or $12 for a Morakniv fixed blade and you will very likely be getting better steel and a slightly longer blade, but they are not full tang. They are wonderful knives, and you can upgrade to the Mora Companion with a nicer handle for around $20. It just depends on what style of knife you want and the intended use.

Fixed - Morakniv, both fixed and folding - Ontario, folding - Kershaw, plus a bunch of Chinese brands. I avoid Ganzo, just because they originally made their name selling copycats and ignoring patent law. But there's a lot of Chinese companies that make good folders now.

Second Morakniv knives. They are my go-to for field dressing game. Very sharp and under $15-20. Durable plastic sheath.
