This deal comes around very regularly but it's still slick and worth it.

I just spent 3 weeks hiking throughout Arizona and Utah and this tool was excellent for planning my days but most invaluable when hiking some of the more confusing trails without a cell signal. If you've downloaded the trail in advance, then you are guaranteed not to get lost, and you even get alerts when you start to veer off trail. Love it.

There is an open source free alternative I have not used but for $18 I'm happy to continue to use AllTrails+.

I have only 2 beefs about AllTrails+ and hope they address these things in future updates:

1. In their information hierarchy, everything is a "Trail." Scenic drive -- that's a trail. Bike path -- that's a trail. Loop route combining 3 different trails -- that's a trail. This last point can get confusing when planning your day in parks where you have a lot of options for navigation -- such as out-and-back vs. combing the trail with others to form different loops. So the "trails" in the AllTrails app don't always correspond to the "trails" on your park map. A better information hierarchy could fix this.

2. There's no way to mark a trail as temporarily closed, or as having open/closed schedules. Many parks and trails are only open seasonally. If a park is closed from, say, October through April, the Alltrails community will gradually mark all of the trails in that park as closed beginning at some point in October, and then when April comes around, they will all still be marked as closed until the community gets around to submitting corrections.

Organic Maps has great offline maps as well, has been using that for a while instead of the greedy subscription model based AllTrails.

For me the application is nearly useless.

It is very difficult to make a path, unless they have improved that in the past couple of years. I forget the details. I think the trail making feature does not support the dragging of the mouse.

It would help if the application recognized dirt roads. I submitted that as a suggestion and they indicated they would implement it but I have not checked.

It would help if it could give navigation instructions, such as what car navigation does. There are very many dirt roads near my home and it would help to have help navigating them, even when walking.

Also, unless they have improved the application in the past couple of years, there is no way to ask another member about a trail the member has posted.

Yeah, this is frustrating for me. There's a lot of OHV trails in the national forests near me that get lumped in with hiking trails. It seems like there's other (better) places to go for OHV and MTB info, so I'm not sure why AllTrails includes those.

I used their free version while hiking in Hawaii. It was good enough because most of the hikes were within cell service and the maps were updating easily. But when service failed, it wasn't as good. I was prepared to purchase the product if we did another hike.

This price appears to be available from time to time. I think I'm in.

I like that you are able to download the trail map beforehand, and it will let you know that you have gotten off trail. There were several times I had no signal but was able to still see my progress on the trail.

I bought this last year in August when it was 50% off.
If I buy this deal, the new renewal will be at $18?

Sadly not working with an existing subscription. I even tried canceling my subscription (through Apple App Store) but it won't let me extend or anything like that. As someone else said - the deal comes around from time to time so hope to catch it next time

Alltrails is two apps: trail/activity discovery and on-trail navigation.

The discovery component is good and free.

On-trail navigation, which is what they are charging $35 / yr for, is very poor. Navigation is buggy , downloaded content gets lost at the worst time when signal is unavailable, and on-trail exploration is very poor. For example, if you download one trail, you don't have content for the connecting trails , so you can't explore in the field.

I would pay about $5/yr for this app but anything more is a waste.

Wave

Members seem to like it. And since the deal has an expiration date, a new thread when one is available is better for everyone.

For some, like me, they could live in a new-to-them region and want to explore. That's currently me- I went with a friend on a quick trail/walk through a local place recently and have wanted to get out and see other trails/walks in the area. Just looking at AllTrails' website, I did notice the park that I plan on visiting soon (as in this weekend) is on there. If I like my experience with the free version of their site on this adventure, then I'll likely get the paid version for the deal price Smilie
