I have both. I prefer the Katapults for some types of wire. These are more finicky, even when you adjust the tension, and have trouble with Romex and wires with hard jackets. They also have trouble with very flexible or thick jackets.The Katapults work reliably with everything I've tried within the gauge range. That being said, I still use these for certain types of wire because they are more convenient, don't have to match the gauge, and they have an adjustable stop to ensure consistent length. They can also do very small gauge wires that are out of the Katapults range.

This is one of those must-have tools imo. Bought this last year and kicked myself for using the cheap-ass wire strippers I have for 15 yrs.

I don't like these because they leave a rough cut on the jacket of many wires.

I like either the Katapult style strippers, or the Milwaukee 7in1 Pliers / Knipex Electrician pliers. Clean cuts on the jackets exactly where you want them every time.

If you are going to use these a lot. Like 3 or 4 times a week. The mechanism that holds the circuit in place to strip the insulation wears out and it stops working. I have never had a pair of these made by multiple companies that have lasted.

Probably good for DIY type who will not use it much. Or if you just want to keep replacing them or fixing the adjustment mechanism.

Did you tried adjusting the tension? Some of these type of tools got star shape adjustment with a screw between lobes to keep it from backing out. This got thumb screw and I can see it loosen a tiny bit each time pressure is applied.

I have this same pair, purchased off Amazon a few years ago for $22. It's a great time saving tool, but the one thing that absolutely drives me nuts is the adjustable stopper. It will not stay put no matter how tight you make it, and after 4-5 strips, it'll shake loose and require setting again. Tightening can only be done via a very small knurled thumb screw and no amount of finger tightening will hold it in place.

The biggest problem with this is that once your strip is too short, you can't really go back and strip a small amount back off again. The jaws will just mangle the insulation and you either have to cut it off and do it again, or use manual wire strippers to fix it. At this point, I'm half tempted to either file a groove into the thumbscrew to allow tightening with a screwdriver, replace it with a set screw, or just take the stopper off entirely.

For just five bucks more at $20.97 you can get the Milwaukee version. I've found Milwaukee as they are usually late to the game (not a bad thing) or designed more recently. Are usually more refined and better designed.
