Good deal - Just keep in mind folks whether you buy new or used HDD it is always a good idea to protect your data by having multiple copies. Me being a computer nerd do all 3 of these below, but you should do at least one (preferably 1 local and 1 remote).

Locally you can do disk to disk backup
Locally you can use RAID and multiple drives
Remotely you can sync your data to a cloud provider like MS OneDrive, Amazon AWS, Google Drive, DropBOx, ect....

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question. I'm a tech novice for the most part. Would people feel that it is OK to buy these used drives? For old movies and pictures. I know it's good to have backups. My goal is to condense all my old 1 and 2 tb drives into one big mega drive. Mostly to sift out duplicates and organize into a more accessible environment. Thank you in advance.

would have loved if the 10% refurb coupon came back as well, but can't resist this price. need 8 to make 48tb nas and 48tb usb backup so i had to make 2 separate orders. with capital one at 4% and paypal at 2% cashback should help. (assuming they stack) i know its usually discussed on these threads, but is there some sort of pin i need to remove on these to properly power them on a NAS? TIA

Buy two and run them as mirror(storage spaces in windows). You'll want redundancy in case one of the drives crash.

I installed these on NAS Synology ds224+, they working great and no special adjustment needed. Plug and play.

Same with my Qnap 653D and Synology 1817+.

Have not test them in regular motherboard.

Preventative wear leveling. Unavoidable fact on many enterprise drives.
When I got my first drive, it was super loud clicking, thought it was gonna die, it is quiet now after it had time to settle in.

What software would you recommend for mirror copy (schedule) on windows desktop?

I bought this at 82.99 and they sent me a WD ultrastar instead of HGST.
Go hard drive support said WD is just retail version of HGST which sells to Data Centers.
I have this very same model. It is tuned for performance and it is lauder when the heads are moving (during use) compared to a desktop HDD. They are very quiet on idle.

I had a coupon for an extra 10% off. It works up to ~$250, so I was able to apply to discount to 3 drives. YMMV, it was on the page so it may be targeted.

The term "mirror" means RAID1 - which many operating systems can do themselves - and it keeps both disks fully synchronized at all times.

The term schedule implies some sort of copy operation that many apps can do. I like FreeFileSync, but so can other full featured apps like Acronis and Macrium

We use to call these death stars years ago in the data center.
I remember an IBM "Deskstar" desktop drive nicknamed Deathstar but that was like 20 years ago..... I never had Ultrastars fail at rates higher than anything else.
