Good deal - Just keep in mind folks whether you buy new or used HDD it is always a good idea to protect your data by having multiple copies. Me being a computer nerd do all 3 of these below, but you should do at least one (preferably 1 local and 1 remote).

Locally you can do disk to disk backup
Locally you can use RAID and multiple drives
Remotely you can sync your data to a cloud provider like MS OneDrive, Amazon AWS, Google Drive, DropBOx, ect....

Haven't worked on one in a while, but My guess would be because Synology sells branded drives and wants you to use them. Plenty of people use non-Synology drives in their NAS units though.

Thank you! I got kapton tape and cut a very small slice just enough to cover the third pin from the left for the power cable and it worked!

Do not sync to a cloud provider like OneDrive or Dropbox. Use a proper bucket platform like AWS, Backblaze, or Azure. If you're taking 12TB x whatever RAID you're using, you'll spend an arm and a leg on OneDrive...

Got one in, full scan with no issues, 34k hours (3.8 years), 32 power on count. Looks good to me.
My drives that I bought new with 34k+ hours show 580+ power on count lol

I'm such a newb when it comes to this stuff. I have a WD Ultra EX2, would these drives be compatible? All the support page lists are WD drives not surprisingly.

Edit: Yeap I'm a newb. Looks like these are WD drives. Hah.

They should work fine barring the mentioned PWDIS discussion depending on your box, you can just pull or tape the pin as needed. Honestly this is a good price and all but it sounds like these aren't refurbished, they're just wiped drives with years of power on time.

Edit: they're probably fine but just be aware you are not getting anything resembling a new drive here. They probably got pulled from data center use given the power on stats vs uptime

Generally yes, but Synology lists disk compatibility for all their models, so go to the support page and check for your specific one.
