This is pretty useless. Read some reviews before wasting money. Problems not limited to dual display not working, tiny plug in cable, poor port locations, usb-c port not video capable, and much more. Buy a $13 non name usb-c hub instead and feel less cheated instead.

Thunderbolt cables are generally shorter that you'd expect, but this is even shorter than those. Adding the complexity of using Thunderbolt instead of a straight USB dock, while gaining nothing unique to Thunderbolt, is not a great idea. Only one downstream port at USB3 or better speeds.
I think a displaylink USB-C dock would be a much better idea, unless you plan on pegging that single 10gbps USB port while also using a monitor at a very high refresh and maxing out your wired network interface.
Words that should chill your soul: "tethered Thunderbolt cable"

Thanks for the display link comment. Came looking to see if supported....

Word of caution, hub in that price range often advertise two 4K ports, even three with DP, but only support one 4K at a time, second one auto downgrade to 1080. Some with VGA auto downgrade everything to 1080 if VGA is used. Read fineprint and/or manual carefully

This particular one may get stuck in a configuration where the display port will not output anything, even if its the sole output, and irrespective of the operating system.
if you have a desktop the hub will dangle from the thunderbolt port because the connecting cable is all of 6 inches. even if you zip tie it somewhere connections to it will be uglier and more unmanageable than spikes on a cactus.
There is NO good use case for this particular hub. It does absolutely nothing other than provide 1 usb a non thunderbolt port while still charging a usbc laptop. There are macbook users who are being forced into a dongle slavery who might benefit from it IF they use only one monitor via hdmi. Even macbooks cant connect to a usb-c monitor with this.
Mac user here - docking stations with fewer ports are useless in most cases. In my case, I use type c port to connect with monitor (will use both type c when connecting to two monitors) and a wireless key& mouse.

A few questions to answer in your post: do you already have the monitors? are they 60hz? what kind of interface do they use (hdmi\displayport\usbc)? what's the exact model of your video card or laptop?

Ok, I think now I finally know the difference between these cheap docks and the branded docks from the large PC makers Lenovo/Dell/HP etc .
I have an HP and it wont boot normally from internal C drive with any drives (non-boot) connected to either my Dell or Lenovo dock.
Ironically I have a cheap Chinese branded drive from 2019 but no display port and just supports 1 monitor at 4K.. This might work in my situation but I might as well use what I have for now and stop buying what I do not need, especially when it is not as easy as Amazon to return.

Display link is using USB bandwidth and your copy instead of the graphics output. It has issues with display scaling in Linux too.
I agree this hub doesn't really offer the advantages of thunderbolt though.
This design seems to have a vastly higher failure rate than the wider-but-thinner portable docks. Many of which lack passthrough power, but aside from Steam Deck this usually isn't a real limitation.
I need to connect my laptop to 4 monitors where 2 monitors are 4k monitors and 2 are standard 1080p. does anyone have any recommendations?
There are quite a few on amazon and/or Chinese website, they run around $80. Just make sure you read the description carefully. Do not count on the number of ports available. The reputable ones always explicitly list resolution and refresh rate of all simultaneous connection combinations.

I manage to find one supporting 8K30, 4K@120, or 2x4K60, or 3x4K60/30, full 10G usb and sd reader ... for around $25. Your comment "spikes on a cactus" is spot on, felt it creates more mess than it reduces. Seriously consider returning it and splurge on a good monitor with hub/kvm
