Checking at Yamaha website, this model seems to be affected just like V6A. Higher end A6A and A8A seems to be fine.

If you have the Q150, sensitivity is 86dB (not efficient) and min impedance is 3.7 ohm (8 nominal). Based on these specs alone, I think you need an AVR that retails for well over $1k (or an external amp as you suggested)!

They don't have much bass response either, did you use a sub with them?
What Denon did you use?
How many channels were you driving?
Were you trying to recreate a rock concert?
The average mid level receiver should be able to drive those just fine.
