Because you can trust a Fluke meter and when you are trouble shooting an expensive piece of equipment, a cheap meter won't give reliable results. Also, when your life depends on a meter, do you want a Fluke or an Amazon Chinese knockoff?

I am not an expert but right off the bat, the 4000-count one you shared will apparently do DC current, whereas the Kobalt (Lowe's) one will not.

I've been doing some comparisons myself focusing on the features that are important to me.

I recently posted a deal on a Klein and a lot of the comments there also mentioned the Kaiweets brand, I think likely similar to the AstroAI. Some of the commenters mentioned concern over trusting a non-major brand (like Klein, Fluke, etc.). So I think the Kobalt would be a good compromise for someone who wants a more-or-less name brand (granted, a 'store brand') with a pretty good featureset and a good price.

This looks like a clone of the Kaiweets (sp?). I have the similar kaiweets version (which was perhaps a little cheaper when on sale from Amazon) and it has been great. My model is the HT206D.

edit: Looks like you can pickup Kaiweets HT206D for ~$32 after clipping coupon on Amazon. That's a solid deal for a great meter (less than I paid for it a few tears ago).

I was skeptical because the Kaiweets looks (and sounds kinda) like so many of the other cheapo Amazon meters but I think you've convinced me!

HT206S has true RMS AC and DC according to their website! Really good for $40

Ive only used mine HT206D a handful of times, but its been solid since I got it. If I were a pro, I may look at a more known brand (fluke), but then the price would probably pull me back to this haha. For casual home/auto work I think this should meet/exceed most peoples needs and expectations. Theres also some non-biased youtube vids on it where they tore it down and put it through its paces and seemed well-reviewed (thats what initially sold me).

Well, I don't own one. The reviews are mixed, but is it an overall good Clamp meter?
Contemplating to buy it just to hv one

Which, the Kobalt or the Kaiweets or the AstroAI?

First question to ask is probably, do you need to read DC current or just AC?

Bingo. I needed to diagnose my AC compressor a few years back with something available locally. IIRC (and I may not), there was a significant price difference between the Southwire meter that measured RMS AC current and the one that (also) measured DC current.

Got the Kai HT206D after the prior Klein deal discussion. For just over $30 it does it all, incl DC current and capacitance and even temperature. Nice little toy.

No DC at the clamp is a deal breaker for me, mainly solar projects

Is there a good one that is under 30 with DC clamp anyone can recommend?

Kaiweets seems to be 50+$ atm

You should be able to get the HT206D for around $35.

Edit: I take it back, price just shot up a bit. but I bet if you watch it for a few days or so it will come back down.

How does Fluke stay in business with all these cheap products?
https://www.amazon.com/Fluke-323-...B00AQKIEXY
Fluke has plenty of contracts w/ goverment and private whise will no replace fluke due to the fact they would need to test and define new procedures which, alledgelly, would be more expensive

Because you can drop a fluke meter off a 3 story building from on top of a 20 foot radio tower on top of the building, have it hit the top of the concrete wall of the building, bounce, hit the ground, bounce again, hit the ground again and when you finally get down to it to pick it up it still works perfectly. And it still works perfectly 20 years after that today.

Very accurate meters, and they won't blow up in your face if you hook them up to something you weren't supposed to.

These days I wouldn't get one without DC. Especially with all the battery systems out there now. Even for your car it can be helpful.

I just ordered a Kaiweets AC/DC clamp with the D shaped jaw. There is an extra 20% off making it just under $25.

Isn't it just easier to get dc current shunt instead? maybe build DIY box with clamps on ends and meter on top, for high current the leads on multimeter would have to be super thick and so is internal board to handle that.

If you're still looking, the HT206D is just under $37 now. And the KC604 is $24.
