I heard that you don't get the lifetime warranty when you buy the batteries separately. Is that true?

That has not been true for many years. These can be registered for the LSA.

Jeff, you are correct, but we don't need to rely on you... is also specifically noted in the Product Description:
"Best of all, these batteries are eligible for the Industry's Best Lifetime Service Agreement, simply register within 90 days of purchase for FREE Parts, FREE Service, For LIFE. Charger sold separately."

My 6.0aH battery went defective last week. Ridgid LSA website never works, but i called and they are sending me a new battery. Seems like they don't want the old one back, so I'll likely have a few project cells in a week. (I suspect it tripped out due to cell imbalance. I'm getting 18.5v at the cell tops.)

Personal note about Ridgid LSA, or more specifically their website: a week after registering your LSA, log in, confirm that it hasn't been approved, call them and they will approve the LSA registration. Then you're set. I've had to call for every LSA registration I've submitted and had to call to file a claim. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've got maybe 20 Ridgid tools and additional 12 batteries guess I've been luck as never had to call for registering but have had to call twice due to replacement under warranty not being shown on my account but that was really not hard to do and went well.
