I keep my Fold 5 then.
I did Fold 5 last year and S24 U this year. In the end up I did not pay any money to upgrade my Fold 4 and S23 U.
As for the tax on the amount btwn the $149 and the $1,099. In some states you will be charged tax on the full amount of the phone, even if your net total is the post rebate amount. So ppl in many/most states might purchase a phone on Samsung.com, have a $150 subtotal for example, but still be charged the tax on the $1,099. in NY you are only charged tax on the subtotal, so a $150 phone after rebate would incur about $13.xx. And that's how it usually works on Samsung.com. Spectrum charges you the full amount of the phone when you purchase and then refund you for the trade in values when they receive and okay your phone).
So I paid smthg like $1,195 because they charged the ny tax on the subtotal. $1,099 × 1.0875 tx), (plus activation fee of $30 iirc)
But im reading 2 ppl here mention those taxes will be returned to me. Which makes sense. If the tax law says only post rebate amount is taxed, should be that way whichever the direction of the rebate. So after my trade-in is accepted I should get back the $950 from Spectrum, and according to 2 here, the .0875% tax I paid on the trade in amount, which was around $83. Which would leave me having paid that net total of $163 ish.

No for CA
After 60 days I asked them to unlock it and they said it had only been used for 3 days so they couldn't until it was used for 60. It had been turned off sitting in the box with no sim card in it.
I am on a T-Mobile phone plan which I cannot port my number out. I assume if I pay in full the Fold, I still need to keep the Spectrum Mobile line open for 60 days before I can use my T-mobile number on it? My plan if that is the case is to use my Apple Watch for calls/texts until I can port my Tmobile line to the Fold and cancel my Spectrum Line. Or please let me know if there is a better way. Thanks!
