how quiet are these? I have a smaller one (different brand) and it just acts as white noise and after a bit I cant even hear it's there...

The 600S noise is 26-55db and the 400 is 22-52db so not much of a difference. I believe they are both capable for similar sized room. I was looking at the 600S this morning when I saw it being almost $100 less. I did a search and not sure how relevant it is with the carbon being behind the Hepa (600S) or in front of the Hepa (400) filter. I am leaning on getting another 400.
600S: CADR of 410 CFM 400: CADR of 430 CFM (need to double check for the 400)
