I LOVED this game. I know nothing about the books it's based on. But it felt like a fun Castlevania SOTN clone. Short, but I like games that I can complete in 10-12 hours.

It's a Metroidvania that follows the characters from the Lodoss War anime/books. If you enjoy both it's a great buy, but still solid if you're just a Metroidvania fan, though it's not at the level of Hollow Knight or SotN.

I have this on my backlog when I was hunting for games similar to SOTN. One day I'll get it cleared out. One day...
I had REALLY high hopes for this game because SotN is one of my fave games of all time. Sadly, this game doesn't come close to satisfying the itch & felt quite shallow. It does feature a neat Ikaruga-esque game mechanic though which makes it stand out. I would advise going in with low expectations & you'll have a good time.
when i was a kid, i used to thumb through the same "RIGHT STUF" catalog that i got through the mail for like years. there were tons of anime and stuff you could mail order (which i couldnt afford), and "Record of Lodoss War" was one of the titles i would constantly come across.
that is the extent of my experience with Record of Lodoss War. the title. in a black and white mail order catalog from like the late 90s. maybe for $8.74 i'll finally engage with the property somehow lol
I'm a metroidvania fan as well and thoroughly enjoyed the game. It's pretty straight forward, IIRC. I enjoyed the style and the level progression. I do t recall ever feeling as lost as I often do in Iga games, but that may be because it feels like a much smaller game. I've been meaning to go through it again.
This was available on Game Pass when it was released and has been discounted on Steam as well.
