The emotional language here is bizarre. It's a laptop. Buy it or don't 🤷 ♂️

Just for reference, my MBP 2020 with 16GBs uses swap memory all the time, and all I do is surf the web with about 9 browser windows open that have tabs.

Do we need to go for $16GB as a minimum RAM? Most of the deals are for 8GB models. 16gb adds another $200 - $300 to the model price.

No, Mac does not have a touch screen or pen access.

Might consider a combination of a MacBook Air (depending on how intensive the computing needs are) and an Ipad with pen if they want to stay in the Apple environment.
Thanks for the information. It is for collage. Deciding between cheap windows laptop and Ipad vs Managing with Macbook. But we still need something to take notes as there is no touch screen support with MacBook.

Most definitely in my opinion. 8GBs is only good booting up the OS and nothing else lol.

Thanks for the info. We need to buy him with 16GB RAM at least. He is thinking about using physical notebook to take notes. We need to get solid laptop either with Apple os or Windows. Good deal on Macbook with 15" screen, 16GB RAM and bigger SSD is hard to come by.

For college? Wait until he gets there, figure out what everyone else has (in his major) and get something like that.

iPad Pro with Apple Magic Keyboard is fantastic for notes, easily lasts all day, and is far more durable against trips and spills than a standard laptop. Then having a Mac mini plus screen at the dorms is easy for doing other kinds of work and the infrequent game. When it comes time to upgrade in 2-4 years, just replace the mini, and it's upgraded, an easy exercise.

Apple Edu has reasonably good prices on all of this until end-Sept, so you have plenty of time to make a decision.

There are routine deals at Microcenter and BestBuy and Woot! for M1 Pro 14" models at around $950 - $1199, if that's an interest, but I would wait.

By what measure are you comfortably in the 19-20gb of memory usage range, not even programming or doing anything intensive?
A bunch of browsers mainly. I use Mullvad browser, LibreWolf, and then Brave, which is a chromium based browser while the others are firefox. no idea why but they eat a lot of RAM and i switch between for different uses

Yes, I am asking you how you are measuring that and why you think running a few browsers puts you at 20GB used.

What are the chances:

- the price goes down further?
- this becoming eligible for 10% back if you have a prime card?
