Like others have said, you can run another OS on this fairly easily. The built-in firmware/BIOS version always prefers to boot from the internal USB that houses the original OS installer, but the manufacturer has an updated firmware available on their forums that gives you more control over the boot order. Highly recommend it if you're using an alternative OS.

Memory upgrade is pretty straightforward, though I don't think you can go over 32GB. It has two slots, so that's 2x16GB.

The BIOS doesn't limit the M.2 slots to just storage devices. I put a Google Coral board in one of the M.2 slots and it's being used to do object detection on security camera footage.

The N5095's hardware video transcoding works nicely too, but I recommend building the Intel fork of ffmpeg if you plan on transcoding 24/7 (e.g., from a security camera). The CPU occasionally seems to choke when doing hardware transcoding for long periods, and the Intel ffmpeg fork handles it much more gracefully than the official ffmpeg release (a few corrupt blocks vs. a completely stopped video stream).

I bought this model maybe 9 months ago and it hasn't given me any issues so far. I have a few other mini PCs running k3s so I run the native tos software on this and aside from Plex it's only acting as a file server. For that purpose their built in software is fine but if you're wanting to do more with it you should put unraid or another open source os on it.
This model does have 2 nvme slots that can be used for cache or extra storage but bandwidth on the board is severely limited so it's almost pointless.

I have it and it's been going strong 24/7 for Plex data (not running plex, but you probably could)for a year plus for me

Bought this last BF for $399. Loaded it with 4 shucked 14tb HDs and and upgraded RAM to 32GB. I'm currently running unraid and using it for jellyfin data and as a backup for my 2 bay synology. Running great so far.

Which OS do you have on it?
Was planning on using the 2-bay version as a NVR with Ubuntu OS + Frigate

I'm running Ubuntu Server, and I'm also using Frigate. Frigate is running in a container via Podman.

Seems to work nicely. The only quirk I recall is that the sensors utility can't read fan information until you force load a module, but I can't recall the details. But Frigate, the Coral board, etc. all worked as expected with no quirks.

Thank you! That sounds exactly the build I wanted to do, with the Coral as well.

Looking for a faster throughput replacement for my DS212J. Is this a good deal? I can support up to 10GBe, and I realize this is only 2.5, but it looks like you can aggregate the two for 5? I haven't done that before, does anyone else have experience with that? Mainly looking to lower my backup time because it currently takes 4 hours for my Proxmox backup of 500GB for one of my VMs

Do you have a YouTube video on how to setup something like this? Or can you steer me in the right direction. Really interested in this setup and thanks for sharing!
