Like others have said, you can run another OS on this fairly easily. The built-in firmware/BIOS version always prefers to boot from the internal USB that houses the original OS installer, but the manufacturer has an updated firmware available on their forums that gives you more control over the boot order. Highly recommend it if you're using an alternative OS.

Memory upgrade is pretty straightforward, though I don't think you can go over 32GB. It has two slots, so that's 2x16GB.

The BIOS doesn't limit the M.2 slots to just storage devices. I put a Google Coral board in one of the M.2 slots and it's being used to do object detection on security camera footage.

The N5095's hardware video transcoding works nicely too, but I recommend building the Intel fork of ffmpeg if you plan on transcoding 24/7 (e.g., from a security camera). The CPU occasionally seems to choke when doing hardware transcoding for long periods, and the Intel ffmpeg fork handles it much more gracefully than the official ffmpeg release (a few corrupt blocks vs. a completely stopped video stream).

I bought this model maybe 9 months ago and it hasn't given me any issues so far. I have a few other mini PCs running k3s so I run the native tos software on this and aside from Plex it's only acting as a file server. For that purpose their built in software is fine but if you're wanting to do more with it you should put unraid or another open source os on it.
This model does have 2 nvme slots that can be used for cache or extra storage but bandwidth on the board is severely limited so it's almost pointless.

Bought this last BF for $399. Loaded it with 4 shucked 14tb HDs and and upgraded RAM to 32GB. I'm currently running unraid and using it for jellyfin data and as a backup for my 2 bay synology. Running great so far.
What are the power consumptions?

I bought an older model from TERRAMASTER and their PSU was crap. There's high-pitched noise coming out of the unit. (Not hard drive since the noise persists w/ ssd).

They were cool with refund though - I bought from Newegg.

For the true cheapskates out there, I bought a DAS version of this enclosure (D4-300, $130), and a cheap used mini-PC on eBay (HP EliteDesk 800G3, $65) plus some generic RAM (32GB, $30) and a small boot SSD (Generic, 128GB, $10), and installed TrueNAS Scale. So, $150 less, a little messier (the miniPC is almost the same depth and width, but only an inch tall, and sits right atop the enclosure, but 2 power bricks, and a USB-C cable run between the units), but very happy with the results.

What software are you using to do the backups.

Hoping for a good deal on synology during prime day
I want some private cloud solution to store all the photo's videos from our phones (auto sync) so we don't pay for google or apple storage?

Can someone suggest a reliable easy to use solution please? Shouldn't require lot of tweaking etc. thanks! This is purely for home use

Does this offer a software raid option like synology hybrid raid?

I'm interested in Unraid as I've heard a lot about it. I want to run RAID0 setup on this Terramaster (I have another 4 bay USB Raid I user for backup) and also a jellyfin server on this device. Would you recommend Unraid? I guess I'm looking for a lightweight OS that can run the Jellyfin server as efficiently as possible. Any info/insight is appreciated.

You lose ability to RAID using DAS. Some folks care about that, but some don't.

Do you have a YouTube video on how to setup something like this? Or can you steer me in the right direction. Really interested in this setup and thanks for sharing!
I didn't follow a specific guide. The trickiest part is just the sequence of steps involved in installing a different OS on the TerraMaster. Once you've gotten over that hurdle, you can just follow generic instructions for setting up your server to run containers (via the Docker or Podman documentation), running Frigate in a container (from the Frigate manual), setting up a Coral device, etc. Once you get the other OS installed, it's just a standard Intel machine in a differently shaped box, so you can basically follow any generic "how to do this on Ubuntu" tutorials floating around.

I didn't follow this video, so I can't speak directly to it working (I just used trial-and-error), but it looks like this YouTube video shows the issues with the default BIOS and how to fix it / install a different OS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPLHHLJzkLs . He follows pretty much the same steps I did, IIRC.

He also shows the disassembly process (which you'll need to go through to remove the built-in OS installer USB stick and install all your M.2 devices). He's installing Debian, but it's pretty much the exact same process with Ubuntu Server -- you'll just create an Ubuntu Server installer instead of a Debian installer if you want Ubuntu, etc.

Yeah, they call it TRAID. It works the same as SHR on Synology.

The D4-300 isn't $130 anymore. More like $170. It is also USB3.1 Gen 1 and doesn't have RAID.

A better choice would be the Mediasonic Raid 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure (HFR7-SU31CH). It is $150 at the moment and has USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps and RAID... if you care about hardware RAID.

Mediasonic Raid 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure (HFR7-SU31CH) has RAID. it all depends on which DAS you buy.

I bought desktop $300 and 12TB HDD for $75. I want to use it as both download and NAS this way.

Doesn't it make more sense than this device?

It depends on the desktop. This NAS is going to be more power efficient than most desktops.

I am currently using an M1 Mac mini I got for $379.99 from the Microcenter deal and a USB HDD.

What 12TB HDD did you buy for $75? If it is one of those used data center drives you better have redundancy. Really with 12TB of data you care about you should always have redundancy and backup.
