My in-laws house has one of these Generacs, as do 8 of my neighbors.

Between the May 16th derecho, and Hurricane Beryl, they have been getting a lot of use lately.

One of my neighbors had his Generac die about 2 hours into the derecho - undervoltage error. Unfortunately the dealer couldn't repair the unit until 4 days later - right after grid power was restored. Needless to say my neighbor was displeased.

Everyone else had positive experiences with their Generacs, however. Some neighbors were very diligent about shutting down and checking oil daily/adding as needed, while planning for a full service after the outage was over.

Overall it seems like a well-made piece of equipment, but definitely too spendy for me. I have a large portable tri-fuel generator that will run most of my house, total investment ~1/10th the cost of an installed Generac.

I don't trust Generac after having several neighbors with their Generacs failing during this hurricane Beryl outage in Houston. The one older lady behind even me had it serviced and working just before the storm, afterwards it just clicks on and off. People can't get Generac on the phone when they need it most.
lol'd my generac standby been running 12 years trouble free. I just change oil /plug filter every 3 years

Runs a handful of times a year. No issues . If it blew tomorrow I'd just buy another and swap out myself since all the plumbing is there.

It's better to pair smaller generator with battery. A lot of power is wasted running the generator at idle.

Considering you can get a tri fuel 15k Watt champion generator for maybe $3k and pay $1k for a transfer switch, maybe $1k for gas line extension, it seems like $6k for this plus maybe $5k installation, this seems pretty expensive for just slightly more convenience 2-3x per year.
That only works if you are home and not away on vacation

Who would you suggest?

I heard lots of Generac success stories right after Beryl.

Except for 1. They filled it with gas 2-3 years ago i"in preparation" but it failed. Sounds like user-error to me.
These don't run on gas

This deal is fine, but Sams club routinely offers lower prices on the 24kw. Just have to wait for a sale. Costco also offers the Honeywell (I understand these are the same internals at the generics) for cheaper prices. Just search around slickdeals and you will find good benchmarks.

Sucks to hear that! Also in the Houston area and have a Generac, and it has always worked. I've only known of instances of these things failing when people didn't have them regularly serviced and maintained. It sucks to pay more, but having Generator Supercenter in Tomball monitoring it remotely is what I would recommend for people who aren't handy with it themselves.

Heard a few people being told general failing because there was not enough gas pressure as demand was very high because so many people running generators. No idea if factual or not.

Been on the fence for a long time to get one of those tri fuel generators. May be super basic, but how do you ensure the rain water isn't damaging it, unless you have like a well ventilated shed or something. But I'd be curious to know cause I am sure lugging that out is probably gonna be a challenge too.

For most people, a transfer switch or interlock will be much cheaper and just as reliable.
