I have a Big Green which is a great machine, and had been using Zep which is something I used to use with an older machine. Worked pretty well, and was cheap. Then I think I got a bottle of Bissell brand solution (forget which one) with the Big Green and left it on a shelf, opting to use Zep. I think I must have had a stubborn stain once because I resorted to using the Bissell solution as a pretreat (I always pretreat with the Zep) and lo and behold, the Bissell actually got the stain out.
So what I typically do now is use the Zep as the main washing shampoo, and pretreat some more suspicious stains with the Bissell solution.
In fact, since we're on the subject, I'll lay out what I do when I clean.
1) obviously vacuum
2) pretreat with Bissel solution and as hot a water as I can get out of the tap. Really soak bad spots and give the entire carpet a good hosing
3) Fill the clean water tank as much as possible, and remove the top (vacuum/dirty) tank to break suction, and scrub the carpet really well. The purpose of the full clean tank is to weigh down the unit for better scrubbing action
4) dump the clean tank, refill with a combo of Zep and screaming hot water, go over the entire carpet and walk back slowly to extract as much dirt as possible. Repeat in the cross direction
5) sometimes I'll go back with clean water and "rinse" in a similar fashion. Also sometimes I'll use Lysol laundry sanitizer in low concentration in the wash cycle.
This featured Bissel product here uses 15% [bissell.com] of this ingredient as their main ingredient instead vs 1-5% in ZEP and probably why they can make the 4x active ingredient claim. Which one works best is up to anyone's personal experience.

Or if you have pets, look for their Pet Carpet Shampoo.
You need to remember that this is used on the upright carpet cleaners like the Big Green machine. You can either fill the water tank with 2 cap full or use it as a pretreatment but use straight water in the tank instead. I do the latter because I got a little one that crawls all over the place and I want to get every single cleaning residue out.

I have a differing experience.
