Based on your analogy, it seems like every network-level security company would want more viruses to sell their products and cloud security services. Regarding leftover junk, there will always be some remnants, including in the registry. When was the last time you installed something that didn't leave anything behind? Suggesting otherwise is unrealistic. Some people, especially those who aren't tech-savvy or can't afford network-level security, still need or want extra protection will buy it. Windows never had a reputation for security, unless we are talking about Apple.

Especially the borders. I sleep naked with my doors wide open. Both of them. House door and barn door.

Can you stack them to a current subscription?
I don't think so. Wait until your current subscription is about to expire and then install the new one. I do this every year.

Norton is one of the worst companies in tech. The only thing you're buying here is a ticket to the class action lawsuit against their billing practices.
Costco has McAfee Total Protection, 5 Devices, 1-Year Subscription for $19.99 if Norton's not your thing.

Can I easily turn off auto-renewal? I assume so but will use a low denomination visa gift card if not.
Yes. You can log into Norton.com and remove your credit card info and autorenew is automatically cancelled. They'll still spam your inbox about it, but it's cancelled. My Live Update subscription is expired right now--no big deal.

When renewing, find Amazon, Best Buy, or Newegg deal for the number of devices you need and buy the digital version. Norton.com customer service chat can apply your new renewal period to your account once they verify your activation code. Installing/ uninstalling is not required. Furthermore, if you're polite with them, they'll occasionally add +3 months to your subscription (assumedly because most people chat-in madder and more unpleasant than a snake straight out of the dryer).

I know right. Why people or any company even bothers using them. Like everything is already exposed and why have security at all? Matter of fact, let's keep everything open while we are at it.
The people who didn't laugh at this obviously don't understand your comment. XD

You can stack them if you contact support via online chat or phone. I've done it for years without issue. Sometimes I even got bonus time added for free or extra free cloud storage if the rep is feeling generous that day. They just ask you to activate the new sub and then merge it with whatever days you have left on your old one on their end. Just be sure to disable auto renewal in your account settings after the rep does the merger, if it requires you to activate it on the new key activation.

I'm not too worried about AV protection these days, but it is always nice to have just in case. More so it is a darn cheap VPN for the year and works well for my purposes.

It's one year upon activation right?
Yes, the time starts when the key is actually activated to your account, not when you buy it. You can hold on to activate until you are ready or contact support to merge with an existing sub if you have one.

Prime doesn't have any good deal on Norton. It used to be like $20 with $10 promo gift card.
New Egg deal seems to be good this year

Does the VPN have a quota? I couldn't find anything documented.

If it does, it is very high. I've used well over 50GB in bandwidth a month, and never had any cut off or slowdowns.
