(Mostly summarizing/carrying this info forward from another thread, but note that 401/372 are contested as necessary for a filter.)

By Scrimshaw in the United States on October 21, 2022 I always buy these Samsung OEM filters because they are certified to both NSF 42 and NSF 53 standards. My young kids drink a LOT of water from our refrigerator filter, so for me, it's totally worth it to make sure I get legitimately certified NSF 53 filters. These filters come with a secure "authentication tag" that's hard to fake, so you know you're getting the OEM product and legitimate certification.
To help the Amazon community, I'll quickly review the NSF certifications you most often see on drinking water filters, so you can make an informed decision.
NSF 42 covers "aesthetic effects", like removing the taste of chlorine, or making sure the water doesn't look cloudy.
NSF 53 covers "health effects", such as reduction of lead, mercury, arsenic, VOCs, and certain parasites, herbicides, and certain other chemicals. NSF 53 filters actually remove these from the water if they are present.
NSF 372 means lead was not used in making the product, but does not mean anything about filtering lead out of the water. Specifically, the product itself must be made with less than 0.25% lead by weight.
NSF 401 covers 15 "emerging and incidental contaminants" not specifically covered in the other certifications, to include things like trace pharmaceuticals, detergents, flame retardants, and other chemicals that may or may not be found in drinking water.
Hopefully this helps you select which filter is right for you. Personally, for me and my family, we choose these Samsung Genuine OEM filters entirely because of the NSF 53 certification.
Final rating: 5 stars, for filter quality and NSF 53 rating. see less
