This is the same outfit that let me order a new one for $100 months ago (along with the $35 plan), and then sat on the order for weeks before saying they were sold out.

I see deals like this pop up occasionally and just want to make sure I am understanding things correctly. To take advantage of this deal, you would sign up for a new line with Straight Talk and get the phone for $74. You would have to have it active for one month, which would be $35. You would cancel before the month is over, so total out of pocket would be around $110-$120.

You would then have an unactivated phone that could be used on wifi (like a mini iPad). After 60 days, the phone would become unlocked so it could be used on another carrier? Am I missing any details here? For us, the use case would be to have an unactivated phone for our child to use (for things like FaceTime and YouTube) when connected to wifi.

Anyways. You need to request unlock via Text while your phone is under service. Like do it a couple days after your account is active. It will tell you the date it unlocks. You should not need the other 30 days of service.

Make sure you request it though. I got a used ebay iPhone 11 which was obviously used. But they never requsted an unlock

However, the SE3 has dropped down a tier and is only worth $400 on trade in.

You don't need to "request" an unlock like that. Texting "Unlock" to 611611 is optional and strictly informational. It has no bearing whatsoever on the actual unlock. All it does is text you back with a date 60 days from when ithe line was activated so that you know when to expect the unlock. And it's not even an accurate date for the unlock in many instances. Actual unlocks usually come through on day 59 or 60, but can be several days late sometimes.

If you bought a used phone that wasn't unlocked, they probably either never activated service on the phone or activated it as a BYOD phone or some other issue along those lines.

I bought an iPhone SE3 a few weeks ago and all is fine. I saw that the refurbished iPhone 12 was in stock at $119.99 and decided to order that. The phone came in perfect condition with 100% battery and full warranty until June 2025. I chose upgrade on the order and when I checked the phone my unlock period remained the original date from the SE 3. I have the new plan in reserve and it will activate in ~10 days. I'll likely sell the SE 3 after it unlocks. A good deal for me.

Note that when you do a phone upgrade like that on an existing line, the reply you get from the "unlock" text will still show the unlock date for when that line was originally activated. However, the phone that was newly activated on that line will still take 60 days before it unlocks. That has occasionally caused some confusion in the past.
