Lots of options out there, but CalDigit has been really reliable.
I have tried Anker, OWC, and Plugable. They were all hot garbage.

All do not provide consistent charge, instead the power to the host drops when you attach peripherals. IT SUCKS WHEN YOU'RE ON THE PLANE, EXPECT 100% BATTERY AND ONLY HAVE 30%.

My laptop is my livelihood, and I don't like interruptions. Especially, if it is a dock. I am willing to spend a bit more for peace of mind. Plus, their support is exceptional, and helped me out of a few jams.

Oh, I can answer this. So our office issues all employees Macbook Pros and wanted to get us docks so we can just plug into our workstation and go. I was tasked with finding the right kind of MBP and dock to buy. So I got to try out one of all of them. We bought OWC, Elgato, Wavlink, CalDigit and Anker (*Anker was USB-C, the rest were TB).

And CalDigit was by far the best. No hassles, no nonsense, no need to unplug and replug external displays to get them to rewake (huge issue with our Wavlinks and no, it wasn't using DisplayLink). The CalDigit was the one that "just worked". No devices disconnecting, no PD issues, nothing. It just worked.

So yeah, if you want the best, the CalDigit is it. We were also able to work out a good price with them directly because we needed 25 units. And their sales and support team are reachable by phone and they are all US based in California and they are totally awesome.

This is so true when my MacBook goes hungry and being used full power with all the accessories attached monitor hard drives. It doesn't have the ability to charge it fast enough.

for this amount, why don't' you just buy any number of OEM TB4 dock? sure you may not have UHS-2, but that's isn't something a dongle couldn't resolve.

I am looking for a reliable switch so I can go back and forth between two MacBooks and one monitor. I assume this won't do it?

took me like 4 months to sell my used dock. Perfect condition for only $80 it was insane. I was only selling because my new job gave me a macbook air and it doesnt support dual monitors without special docks and software

Okay what am I missing here. Only a single display port and no other video out? Not a single hdmi? Are they assuming we all have daisy chainable displays?
HDMI is inferior to DisplayPort. You can always downgrade from DP to HDMI with a cheap dongle, but you can't "upgrade" HDMI to DP.

If you're going to have 1 video out, I'd hope it'd be a DisplayPort.

this is not that, no. are you using 1 keyboard, 1 mouse and a monitor and you're looking to share them between 2 computers? then you are looking for a "kvm switch". some support monitors others only support USB devices (like keyboards and mice)

but if it's literally just the monitor, then get a monitor that has more than one video input and put one computer into each. then just swap between VIDEO1 and VIDEO2 on the monitor,

Not sure about HP, but Lenovo docks are some of the worse. They just go with the cheapest OEM and ODM.

I think these are good options because PC companies sometimes lock TB features, so it works specifically with their docks. For example I had an XPS for work, and Dell had locked 98 watts of power delivery.

I am on Mac most of the time, and the TS3 Plus has worked really well for me.
I can vouch for HP docks being bad.

I had an HP thunderbolt dock for my work laptop (macbook pro). It sucked. You could only do a firmware upgrade from Windows, and I didn't have one.
After networking breaking (ethernet), I bought a TB4, and it's amazing.

I have been using the non-'Plus' version of this dock for at least 4 years. I run two monitors through this off my MacBook Pro M1 Max. I have also attached a cheap USB dongle to attach my printer, mouse, and assorted other devices. It has been rock solid. If 175$ seems high, check out FB marketplace.

If you plan to use this with a Steam Deck in any capacity, look for something else. It doesn't support DP alt-mode over the Thunderbolt connection. The TS4 does... for a price.

Otherwise, excellent dock. 100% reliable.

I have a TS3 Plus with a MacBook Pro and a Dell U3223QE monitor. It may not be the dock, but I always have random issues waking up my Mac. I would have to unplug the USB-C cable that feeds power from the dock into the Mac then plug it back in. Super annoying. 2 emails to CalDigit was useless. I'm only keeping it because it's been expensive to buy.
