the RZ70 has a better and more powerful amp, processes more channels and can support Dirac live bass control .

if you don't need / want those features, then the RZ50 is a very good 2nd choice at a much more affordable price.

How much better is this than the RZ50 which is almost 1/3rd the price at $799 new. What in the RZ70 makes it worth the $1200 more?

Possibly not much.

This has more power but if you use the preouts it negates that.

Both process 11 channels, this just powers all 11, using the preouts negates this.

Unless all 11 speakers are full range/reference you may not need all that power.
Not to mention preouts negates that also.

If you read prior posts everyone believes Dirac Live Bass Control has no benefit especially considering the cost.

Here is a comparison of the two.

$25 off with "no rush" shipping (3 day VS 2 day) from Crutchfield, plus a 60 day return policy VS Amazon's 30 day. I opted for Crutchfield. This will be replacing a Marantz SR-7015.

It has been proven via bench tests that it will not choke on low impedance loads, unlike the RZ50 which sneakily ramps down power during such a scenario (aka "stealth protection").

Additionally, the RZ70 has the horsepower (MIPS) to process DLBC, unlike the RZ50. If you don't use Dirac, then this doesn't matter!

Why would someone buy this and not use the amp section?

actually pretty common. for anyone that already owns an external amp they can use this as a pre-pro along with their own amp. a very cost effective solution as you can't get a pre/pro with Dirac anywhere near this price point. i see a lot of people using this along with a 3 channel amp for the most important front channels (LCR) and then the AVR handles the surround/Atmos channels that use far less power.

I see, I guess it's a good option with the 3 channel amp. Are dedicated pre/pro really that much better?

in general separates will use higher end chips, more robust components, etc. they are more purpose built than an AVR which is a jack of all trades (Preamp, processor, amplifier, signal distribution, all rolled into one box). AVRs do have to cut some corners to meet the lower price point. is it noticeable sonically? that is for you to decide.

the separates market is not what it used to be. mass market brands (denon, onkyo, sony, yamaha, etc.) have abandoned that market in favor of higher end 11/13/15 channel AVRs such as this unit. they can work perfectly fine in many situations / budget ranges. separates from smaller companies are still available and desirable if it is in your budget.
