in general separates will use higher end chips, more robust components, etc. they are more purpose built than an AVR which is a jack of all trades (Preamp, processor, amplifier, signal distribution, all rolled into one box). AVRs do have to cut some corners to meet the lower price point. is it noticeable sonically? that is for you to decide.
the separates market is not what it used to be. mass market brands (denon, onkyo, sony, yamaha, etc.) have abandoned that market in favor of higher end 11/13/15 channel AVRs such as this unit. they can work perfectly fine in many situations / budget ranges. separates from smaller companies are still available and desirable if it is in your budget.
I guess what I am asking is, let's say all the amps and speakers are the same. Calibrated by the same professional calibration. Using the same Dirac live. How much better would a trinnov processor be compared to this onkyo?
what movies utilize 11.2 channels? i cant find any in my search. i cant find any data showing what movie supports x number of channels. do all movies with an atmos logo support 13.2 fully?
Why would someone buy this and not use the amp section?
If you have 11 speaker setup, all are full range/reference & you want it all in one box, yes this may be a good choice.
If that's not the case for any of those, there are many less expensive AVRs with preouts that can process 11 channels that could do the job.
As an example:
Denon 3800 has all the features this has(minus Dirac Live being an option) + 2 more independent sub outs and all 11 channels has independent preamp mode.
Even this only lets you turn off L&R fronts OR all channels.
The 3800 has dropped down to $900, even adding Dirac Live to it for $350 now.
There is no other AVR or pre pro that comes close to that performance.

You have to keep in mind as great as Trinnov is and it's probably the pinnacle(imo) in RCs.
It won't improve the quality of the amps, speakers, room acoustics.
Not to mentioned how knowledgeable the person doing the calibration.
All that plays a critical role on how much better it would be and more importantly is it worth the cost, Trinnov is not cheap!

This didn't really answer my question, and I am just really curious to what the difference would be other than the price. All things equal, how would a very expensive processor that uses the same room correction software (in this case Dirac) be better than a receiver using all preouts to the same amps and speakers.

The restriction is more based on your AVRs processing.
Object based soundtracks offer way more than 13 channels.
As an example, this only offers two pairs of object based processing.
Something like the 6800 offers three pairs.
Currently have a 7.1 setup that I plan to eventually expand to 7.1.4. Probably not interested in doing too much calibration tinkering. Would it be better to get this or the Denon X3800H with a separate 2 channel amp?

Ok so assuming when you say expensive processor you mean the AVR.
You can use my example prior regarding the 3800, which is my scenario and what I went with after several auditions.
I have the same Dirac Live and all 9 of my speakers are all full range/reference.
My external amps easily out perform the internal amps on this.
Since I can disengage all the channels, this doesn't offer much benefit if at all over the 3800 imo.
If you only needed 3 good amps say for your LCRs. You can just disengage those three giving the rest more power/efficiency.
Now whether you would find it better, I could not answer.
TBH for me it is much better since I also added Dirac Live Bass Control & still had over $400 compared to this which does not include it.

No I am actually asking about an act like this onkyo>pre out to 11 amps >speakers vs a trinnov>to 11 amps to speakers. If both using Dirac calibrated by the same professional calibrator. Would the trinnov be much better. Basically just uninhibited the onkyo as a processor. How much difference would there be

I think you are confusing AVR processing and Room Correction software.
Dirac & Trinnov are room correction software.
You will not find Trinnov on anything other than ultra high end (mostly) processors/AVRs.
There is no comparing those two, two very different tiers/levels!

It depends:
This does not include Dirac sub/bass integration, it relies on the AVR for that.
Many people recommend going to other AV forums for best settings to use.
Whether they work for you, you'll have to try it to find out.
The 3800 has XT32 which has sub integration.
How well it works without adjustments can vary also.

if you don't need / want those features, then the RZ50 is a very good 2nd choice at a much more affordable price.

There is one thing the RZ50 does not have that I wanted and that is Auro3D.
No website says this (RZ70) has it, but deep on the vendor website in a specs sheet I saw it say it was to be added in a firmware update in June.
Does anyone know if this has Auro3D or not? and it supports the full layout including the VoG channel?
Otherwise I already use external amps and I have 4 subwoofers so I cant take advantage of any other new feature.
