Functionality wise, are there any differences between this version and the one without the screen? The one without the screen is for indoor only and is 4/8 vs 6/12 in the OP.

I have using 2 of these for the past 3 years, front and backyard, without fail. They work great, easy to program and control via the device or by the app.

Check with your local water provider to see if there are any rebates!

Have installed 4 of these in different homes over the last 4 years- all solidly functional and no issues. Recently installed a Rachio- wasn't impressed. This is a great deal. The transformer (24 V output) is powerful enough to even run two valves at the same time. You can use the app to control multiple units too.

"No" if you want to control 8 stations individually. There is a "12 zones" version you can consider. Just wire 8 of the 12 zones from that device and you can control all those 8 individually.
