35s get hate b/c they're mostly unnecessary. If you have 25s and 10s, then you don't need 35s, since the 25s and 10s have added usefulness on their own. And if you're buying multiples for heavy lifting, doing the math in our heads using 90lb increments is so ingrained in us that 70lb just throws us off!

If you could go back in time to when paying by cash and change was the norm, would you prefer that the US add a $.35 coin? What about a $.15 or $.75 coin? Or do you think that having yet another denomination would make things less convenient?
I fully support people getting 35 lbs plates to save money, because they like them, or because they are part of a set. But I do think there are good reasons why many others prefer gyms to skip the 35s.
In all honesty, the biggest issue probably isn't any of the above. It's that most gyms seem to have inadequate space for 35s. For example, a rack or weight tree may have 4 poles on each side. Enough space to keep 5s, 10s, 25s, and 45s organized. But as soon as you add 2.5s or 35s, there is no longer a straightforward place to put all of the different sized plates.
