I've had the 300 and the 500 before moving to Fanatec DD (Direct Drive). I've also had the Logitech G27/29/920, etc.

The 300 is a leap in terms of force feedback quality, but still belt driven. It's held up well in terms of compatibility for a long time. That's the good news. The bad news is that I'd think it's only a matter of time before it no longer is. My 500 wasn't supported on GT7 for the PS5, but it worked with the PS4 version (even when played on a PS5 console). I ended up getting a Drive Hub device that spoofs other wheels so I could use it with the PS5 version of the game. But even that had its flaws. So I sold it to get to Fanatec DD.

All this to say... if you're a semi-casual gamer who wouldn't be upset with it POSSIBLY no longer being supported by next gen games in the coming years, I'd make the jump.

If you're a hardcore racer/gamer and you have a bit more budget, perhaps look into a used Logitech DD system. I got mine for ~$600 with wheel, pedals (including add-on clutch pedal) and 8nm boost kit. As good as the Thrustmaster FF wheels are, Direct Drive is a notable jump up coming from belt wheels.

Oh, and pretty much all of the Logitech wheels feel like toys.

EDIT: I just noticed this is the GT version which includes the upgraded pedal set versus the standard 2-pedal set that is included with the base 300 kit. That one is typically hard to find for much less than $300 new, so to get this WITH the better pedal set for $300 is kinda slick -- again, epecially if you're okay with this POTENTIALLY not having a long life in terms of game compatibility or don't mind getting a Drive Hub adapter [myshopify.com] if it does.

How much better is this over a Thrustmaster TMX with say about couple hundred hours of use over the years (base model, with 2 pedals). Worth the upgrade?

I wouldn't go from a TMX to this, if you want more than the TMX offers, go direct drive fanatec or Moza bundle.

direct drive is a dramatic leap in feel/performance - while this is a good or even great deal relative to other budget offerings, i think it's worth spending more to get a DD setup. they aren't THAT much more expensive and sometimes you can buy brand used and save a lot. haven't been looking for a few years, otherwise i'd make a few specific recommendations.

Not sure why anyone would buy this over the Fanatec CSL DD bundle at $499. It's a completely different experience. The thrustmaster is a toy.

If you got a Microcenter near you, I highly recommend going direct drive and pick up a Moza R5 bundle instead. I think it's $368 right now which is kind of a steal considering that it was $550 on release and I bought mine on sale for $499 on a black Friday a couple of years ago.

100%. Even at this sale price, the belt driven wheels like this one are just about obsolete with the price of direct drive wheels getting lower and lower

R5 doesn't work on PS5 though without adapter, and even then from what I was seeing is it's a less than desirable experience

For PC, absolutely. For PS5, Fanatec wants another $200-$300 just to get in the door.
