If I want to have a hotspot device that supports a VPN, would a rooted Pixel phone or this be better? Seems like the Pixel would be easier since it has the IMEI of a phone and you wouldn't need to make any APN setting changes.
Lowest in a while was $137. Price rarely drops on this V2. Very convenient that it allows you to change the IMEI and TTL times, using your phone lines data for a hotspot. No need to pay extra fees to the carrier. I've used this with AT&T and T-Mobile. Though now that I have Google Fi, don't really need it.

If you root it, then that's fine; the only thing is that the phone is running other things in the background, it will run hot and deplete the battery faster if you are connected with active traffic.

I have one of these and used it on a week vacation outside the US this spring.
The best thing about it is that it's already unlocked so you can buy a local data sim (or arrive with a pre-activated international sim) and since your phone is connecting via wifi, the wifi calling and texting works. You can put your phone in airplane mode and turn on Wi-Fi and not worry about getting international roaming charges while still maintaining connectivity with your usual phone number. This doesn't work with a 2nd data sim in your phone as for some reason they seem to block activation of wifi calling when receiving data via a 2nd sim
I also keep a few openvpn and wireguard VPN protocols in the device and it can secure my connection back to my home network or a few VPS and this is also nice when using wisp mode to connect to another wifi network and tunnel all of my traffic over the VPN and not have to connect multiple devices to a sketchy local network.
There's a small screen which is useful to show you the connection status and IP address.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it gets much hotter than any other portable WiFi router I've used and also other hotspots I have used. Also, at this time it doesn't support eSIM although I read on the forums that there might be a possibility they can implement that?
Overall, really like the gl.inet routers and skinned openwrt OS! Almost bought the Flint2 to flash openwrt for home usage today and have two Beryl (MT1300) and an older AR300M that do travel duty. (Yes, I actually traveled with a hotspot and 2 other portable WiFi routers because then I could set up one in each of my family's rooms to protect their connections too.)

Because some folks like/have to connect to their home VPN instead of a public one (like NordVPN). Accessing your home VPN also gives you access to other home devices (NAS, etc.) and services.

Do you have the V1, I know that one had some "issues", especially with heat and often times shutting down the device. The V2 I have when I used to use it did not have any heat problems.

Do you mean like directly on the phone and share the hotspot feature? It's blocked, so it doesn't work like that out of the box; hence a previous commentator asking about rooting their Android device. Rooting would allow such a scenario to work.
There used to be an app, not sure if it still works, that doesn't require root - it's called NetBridge for Android. Maybe check that out first.
