You're just picking a card each turn and reacting in a very simple way to what your opponent is doing. Oh no they grabbed a science card, i better get one so they don't get a science victory! Rinse and repeat for all win conditions. The game practically plays itself. It's fun for like 2-5 plays before the novelty wears off.

On the site where people are addicted to buying games and only play them a handful of times (if at all) before moving on to the next crop of the hundreds of games that come out every year like a swarm of locusts? Oh no!
Before proceeding, I'll readily admit that I have a ton of games, and love getting, learning and playing new ones. That being said, I simply disagree with you. I think this game is great.

You're describing the basis of so many games that are great, Lost Cities being one of them (and at this point I've lost count to how many times my wife and I have played that game).
With the majority of board games, you could probably algorithmically determine the next best move based on all known information. That doesn't change the fact that 7 Wonders Duel is both quick (besides the setup) and fun. I appreciate that they've included multiple ways to win (military, scientific, civilian), and between that and the varying board state (card layout) each game, my strategy is frequently shifting.
I picked up the Android version of this a while ago before I bought the physical game, and I've logged a TON of games on there at this point (in addition to the physical version). Sure, the Android achievements which encourage me to greatly change my strategy for some games to get a more unique achievement help, but still, generally speaking it has great repeatability and really is fun.

This game slaps. Haven't played a better 2 player game and the 'randomness' makes for pretty even game play even if players are 100% on the same level.
I like this game, but you really need one of the expansions to make it shine (I like the pantheon expansion better). But it's a strategic board game, where the fun is calculating, and predicting your opponents next move. You'll be saying to yourself: "If I pick this card, he'll pick this card, and then I won't be able to pick this card, etc.", and then you'll be looking at your opponents money and seeing if he can build his wonder and trapping him into discarding a card that'll reveal another card, etc. but yea you can boil it down to "oh no, he picked this card, I better pick this one". But that's just a beginners way of thinking, and I guarantee any experienced player in the game would trounce him. But yea this isn't a high social game, but of strategy.

Just sounds like you fundamentally don't understand the game at all if you think it's that simple to win.
I'm dying to know what you would consider a good game, especially at 2 players. Lol
One of the best 2-player games you can find.
Of course games like twilight struggle have more complex strategy, but that's 3-4 hours vs 30 mins in Duel. Different leagues

by that same critique, the fact that it ranks so high after 9 years is an even bigger kudos towards it.
I think it's a very good game. But it's on sale all the time, so no one needs to rush out to jump on this deal.
