62 ohms impedance means these bad boys are for home use with a nice receiver and your favorite music like you never heard it before. These are also comfy enough to wear for hours, on my ears anyway. Be sure to break them in before assuming you've heard better. Lastly, if you are a bass head keep looking since reference is all about balance and neutrality at all frequencies. I am an ex-DJ not an audiophile so bear that in mind.

K701 is not for the normal people who would want a plug and play solution. It picks amplifiers and you could have a fancy set up and still have bad sound coming out of it.
Just get a HD6XX if you are not into hifi but just want to get a pair of goodish open headphones for music.

I own the K702, which has similar specs and looks similar, but is about $110 (list) cheaper (so a lesser model). I also own the Sennheiser 6xx and 559, Hifiman Sundara, Phillips, and other sets, mostly in the typical $250-350 (when on sale) range. I must say that these have slowly become my favorite headset for all kinds of music (typically vocals, midrange oriented, no heavy bass), and they also seem very comfortable to me.

For $156 this is very "SLICK". Big Grin

As others pointed out, you will need a headphone amplifier (not all receivers have good ones). I am using some from Schiit Audio and they work very well.

Both are great headsets, but for $100 less I'd get these, but if you do not have a Headphone Amp, that's where the $100 goes...

It's always been around this price. Don't fall into the percent off tactic. Not a big sale.

The K701 has a non replaceable cable while the K702 has a replaceable cable. Not sure if the K701 is that noticeably different in terms of sound signature from the K702. Maybe it holds value as a collecters item?

I'll find out later today, or after it's burned in. Given Amazon's fair return policy and the rather low price (they are usually more like $200) I ordered one.

Update: these headphones are great. I received them on Saturday, and right out of the box (without burning them in) they sounded different and ultimately better to my ears than the K702s, which I really like. They have a different, slightly clearer, and higher sound signature. Some folks may not like the extra treble, but I do because it is clean. Also, the soundstage is widened and there is more detail to the music. By comparison, the K702 sounds (almost) a bit muffled (again, the 702s are great, I am just comparing them to the K701s).

For $156 this is a great deal!
