Very bad warranty on tosot brands, we have a unit where the compressor is leaking from top, and we've been waiting for tosot to source the part and ship it to the distributor to have our unit fixed and it's been months of contact and all we can do is wait. It's just been a waiting game so far. So a more reputable and represented brand for heating and cooling would be more preferable.

The unit is precharged in the sense that the refrigerant comes with the unit. It's locked away in the outdoor unit. You have to install both units and make the lineset connections between the two, which are at normal atmosphere with moisture inside them, and evacuate the lines, and then you release the refrigerant. There is Mr Cool, which provides a system where you wouldn't need to vacuum the line, but they cost more and seem to have a similar level of dependability. You can borrow vacuum and manifold gauge sets from Autozone for free through their loaner program. I did an install last month for a Costway unit and the vacuum process wasn't bad at all

For this price these are disposable you get what you pay for so if you purchase something that's cheap then you should know better

He meant that the compressor is charged, unlike mr cool with quick connect evacuated lines, once you connect the lines with flange fittings, you need to vacuum out the line set before you release the freon from the outdoor unit. I literally installed a similar unit last night for my garage.

I'm surprised that people buy items like this off of woot. I feel like woot is a surplus clearinghouse. And it seems like the surplus is coming from returns, rejects, poorly performing or designed products. I have never been satisfied with Woot purchases. I received a fake pair of Oakley's from them before. They were bad fakes too.

I heard that you can make these mini split units with low btu to be able to plug into your standard 115v house outlet. Is this true? That would be a much easier diy than to pay an a/c installer.

The correct answer is the lineset does not come pre-charged, only the unit.

The charge in the unit is sufficient to charge the lineset.

If you don't want to buy a vacuum pump you can use something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HNGX...uage=en_US

Alternatively, and more-or-less illegal in the US, but the manuals for these things (especially the Midea) often allow for flushing the lineset with refrigerant.

This is a big no-no in the US, if you get caught its a $10,000 fine.

The Pioneer set is legal in the US, but honestly you're better of renting or buying a vacuum pump, and buying a cheap micro vac gauge. They're really not that hard to work with.

I called a local heating and air place to see how much a mini split would cost. I was expecting maybe 2-3K since the units run about 1000-1500, and it will maybe be 1-2 day's worth of labor. Dude told me $7,000 for one room. What, are they making $5K per install?

Best prices are going to be sole proprietor businesses that are mobile and run their business out of their truck, not a heating and air place with a storefront. I am curious what they charge as I'm considering one of these but I don't want to do the install.

They probably buy units through their distributors. I have two pioneer units they work very well but just looking at the materials used in fins and stuff I have no illusions its going to last more then 5 to 7 years. Im sure the mitubishi or whatever brand they are using is just a better machine.

The bracket is another $50 bucks and line set covers another $100. Toss in a some electrical wire, breaker, and disconnect and your looking at about $100. Going back and fourth to the store and picking up and dropping off the unit your looking at a days worth of labor for 1 guy. If he's got a helper it adds up.... They are basically quoting you 3 to 4k for the 1 day for their crew... If you got a large centrail air unit it would probably still be a days labor...

DIY will save you a bunch if you able to... Or get a quote to install multiples since you already have paid the sunk cost of getting the crew to your house the marginal price for a second or third could be minimal

I was talking with a guy who works for an HVAC company. He was saying that most HVAC companies don't want to install these because they'd rather send their crews out on bigger jobs. As a result, they come in pretty high on the labor side relative to the cost of the unit itself. There are dedicated installers of mini splits that you can find occasionally. One I found was half the price, closer to $2k with the unit, whereas the HVAC places were anywhere from $4.5-6k.
