Thanks for posting, I rarely see sportscard Slickdeals listed! I picked up a box using the $5 off coupon Best Buy sent customers a couple of weeks ago.

If I were looking for higher quality cards, possible autographs, etc. what packs should I be buying? My son is getting into card collecting and I'd like to go for some better quality than just the common ones over and over.

Topps Chrome has boxes with guaranteed signature cards most likely of players you have never heard of but if you like gambling go for it.

So generally it's best to just buy a card you want? Sorry for the dumb questions. Never got into it and my 6 year old is obsessed.

depends what your son wants to get out of it. buying wax (sealed packs, boxes, etc...) are going to generate insanely negative ROI. If he only wants certain cards or certain players and that is his top and only priority in collecting, dont ever buy wax. Just find the singles he wants and buy those.

personally i very rarely buy singles. i usually buy hobby boxes of topps products only. but my intent and priority is different. i love the nostalgia. Going to the baseball card shop and buying packs to open brings back some good memories. i like ripping wax with my kids and hope that they will also grow to enjoy the hobby. For me, the negative ROI and sunk cost is worth it because I dont collect to invest or make money. I do it purely for the fun of it. I also only buy Topps products because they still hold the license for MLB. I just dont like the way that unlicensed baseball cards (Panini) looks when the players dont have the logos on the uniforms. That part is just a personal preference.

careful what you wish for Smilie

none of these are upper end product. if you want to get into higher end stuff, sky is the limit. Top of the food chain is probably Topps Transcendent (not sure they still release this product) which is gonna run you $20K+ per box. Topps also releases other premium product that will run you anywhere from $500-$2K per box. If you want to hunt for prospects, you want to go with Bowman or Bowman Draft. If you want a guaranteed auto, most hobby boxes will guarantee a "hit" card (auto or a patch card). Some sets like Topps Archives guarantees an auto but its literally 1 card per box.

For a 6 yr old I probably wouldnt get into higher end product cause its going to get real expensive real fast. I always recommend that collectors first getting into it stick with the flagship product (Topps Series 1, Series 2, Update) which is affordable and has history, or go with Bowman if they want to prospect chase.

It's all a gamble and money maker for topps so don't expect big hits with little investment, and probably little oversight on what goes in which box to make sure everything is fair on the more exclusive hobby boxes. Some sets have different chase cards that are fun to collect so go for the things you or your kid likes but be warned you can go down a collecting rabbit hole if you are a completist and will end up with a ton of unwanted cards. Usually cheaper to buy various sets or cards you like on ebay after a series loses its buzz if you don't want that but not as fun.

Yes for value. Ripping packs is fun and can be addicting lol. But also disappointing.
