Just picked mine up at a local BB outlet. M2 Air 512gb. A few scratches but nothing terrible. Apple Diagnostics shows there's no issues. Battery at 100% health but coverage expired in March 2023. So certainly's been owned for some time but otherwise good condition and rarely used it seems.

Why not buy a brand new M1 unit for $650 from Walmart? Brand new and smell fresh.

My first thought and it's sad that this is so, because otherwise those are all great systems.
Absolutely not ewaste. Perfectly fine for a web browsing machine that will likely still get updates and be perfectly usable for another five years. Not everyone needs a beast. I say this as someone with many high powered systems with tons of memory.

Yes. IMO Apple should move their base configuration to 16GB RAM but to call one with 8GB ewaste is ludicrous and leads me to believe you're likely cycling through systems often enough to be an ewaste contributor more than you'll be willing to admit to yourself

Surface Laptop with Haptic touchpad and 120hz touchscreen is going to be a better option. Unless you want macOS.
Apple long kept these two advantages which are now no longer relevant.
efficient chip and build quality.
What are you on about lol. The m chips are still monsters, trackpad is still unmatched and apples build quality still surpasses every other laptop manufacturer. Who even uses touchscreen on a laptop.

Gotta love how they keep pushing "faster processors" while hamstringing base machines with 8GB of memory. Marketing at its finest. I'll take a few gens old with more memory any day of the week.

Agree on most points. But Apple does make questionable decisions to make customers spend more money. I doubt you need to be a Pro to enjoy a smoother refresh rate and more ram on Air line-up. And I understand Apple added notch to improve the camera quality (don't think people WFH need to show more pixels on calls with peers), but why not include a superior and more convenient FaceID if you are engineering a giant notch?

I just purchased the same one for shipping. If it looks used with scratches I'll be returning mine. For a refurb I expect it to be mint condition with 100% battery life

I already have a spec'd out M2 Pro Mac mini, but I ordered the 8/512 M1 air. I just need something portable, and this fit the bill.

Yes Apple has MANY downsides but build quality (recently and generally) and processors are definitely not one of them though lol

8 GB RAM is more than enough for my M1 to work flawlessly and it outperforms many of my Windows devics. I've noticed very little slowdown, and when I do, it's usually network-related and not the computer itself. I think personally I'd pay the premium for a brand new M1 at $649 from WalMart, but these devices are great.

For those who are interested, there seems to be an i7 MBP w/16gb of ram for ~$800. On its face, it seems like a good deal, but there are complaints about overheating/crashing in the reviews.

To the laptop experts out there, do you think this is a good deal? What are your reservations about buying such a laptop at this price?

It is 9th gen Intel which is now 5 years old, they get hot with way worse battery , they are way less powerful than the m1 and apple is mainly prioritizing and optimizing for their own chipset, OS/software support will be short. These are way cheaper on eBay as well, like $450 and less because no one wants them.

There is absolutely no reason to buy this unless you are aware of the downsides and get it for dirt cheap. I would only ever consider buying m processor MacBooks unless you have a specific use case i.e windows/applications you need Intel architecture for
