How do these compare to the Monoprice guitars? I was looking specifically at their higher-end Strat-looking unit (their site is down so I can't get the exact name and the exact link, although I think this is it [monoprice.com]).

Oh now! I pulled the trigger on the lime green Sonic Tele finally. Been wanting that one to play with (& possibly mod) for a while. Couldn't pass up that price.

I've owned Indio as well as Squires. I'd say build quality on Squire is better. The gig bag on Indio was a nice touch. The specs on your link looks solid. What I ended up doing was getting a squier and swapping the pickups for Seymour Duncan. Sounds fantastic.

Any recommendations on an entry level guitar? I am looking for a new hobby, would like to learn how to play a guitar.

Get something that you think looks cool, something you actually want to play with. Either budget for a setup, or tools and time to learn how to do it yourself. Plan on replacing strings fairly soon after buying. And start with something similar to what people you admire are playing.

This is great advice. I'll just add this tiny bit: get in the habit of practicing to a metronome. You'll thank yourself later.

I never really liked the look and tone of Fender, I've always preferred Les Paul, Ibanez, or Gretsch. I haven't played for at least a couple of decades since high school though and I've forgotten a lot and would like to get back in. Would you recommend this or wait for one of the Gretsch sales?

If you don't like the look and tone of Fender, then I don't really see why you should bother with this deal. There are several good Gretsch deals posted on SD right now, and if I were you, I'd go for the G2215–P90. It's got a P90 and a Broadtron, which makes it more versatile, and a classic single cut body that looks rad. I've heard a lot of good things about that model, too, and I think it'd still be a keeper if you decide to upgrade down the road.

Last thing I need is another P bass but if that lime green Squier had a maple neck I'd buy one immediately just to hang in the living room.
