It has 220 reviews with 20 of them 1 star, none of them particularly concerning, and 150 of them 5 star. Dewalt doesn't have any stationary saws, they have a nice jobsite saw but this is a completely different class and anybody that actually needs this type of saw knows that.

this and lowes version are good induction saws, bazillion times quieter and better build than direct drive saws. That said it's a contractor saw, fence is 2 piece so it can get out of wack a bit, quick fix with 8 foot level and retighten. Had a couple of the delta's like them quiet, accurate t fence, dust collection was what you'd expect with a contractor, can be improved if you build a boxed base with dc port and slanted inside and ditch the tube base on this. I would not buy one for 699 though, for 399 if i didn't need mobility and choice was this or a dd saw...no brainer, direct drive saws are what they are they will get the job done that's it...i don't know why people buy them over used contractors if they don't need mobility, most don't seem to know the difference is the motor and carriage and belt, though the fence does take space in tight garages. better investment is a 2000's unisaw though if you have 240. I don't like to old old ones too much cleanup but 2000's are usually pretty clean...it's just a forever saw.

The motor issues are almost all tied to earlier versions of this saw. Ive personally had my hand on a couple dozen of these (and the blue twin), and while I'm sure it can happen, so far I haven't seen a top out of tolerance. Now the one criticism that I personally can levy on this saw is that the blade isn't square out of the box more often than not. Which is also coincidentally why I've had hands on so many of them. It's not difficult at all to get the blade square by adjusting the motor, but this saw seems to find its way into the hands of relative beginners of not just woodworking but anything tool related, and they can't seem to follow the instructions to square it up.

I have both, and this (and the Delta) have a wide gap in between them in terms of performance and capability. The Dewalt only comes out when portability requires it.

Can you reduce the "width" footprint of it, compared to the stock picture above, easily, for storage, or no?

Define "lots". You do know that negative viewpoints are over represented in online reviews, correct? The vast majority of satisified purchasers don't bother posting a review because they're not motivated to do so one way or another. Someone with a bad experience is mad, and is motivated to complain about it online, often even before customer service has a chance to make it right. In spite of that, the overwhelming number of reviews are positive. Many of negative ones are about alignment out of the box. Which, if you know anything about this type of saw, is a normal part of the set up process.

You can't, which is why mine serves dual purpose as a router table amongst other things. It's super easy to maneuver though, even in the confines of my basement workshop.

or who knows what kind of overloaded circuit they're plugging into do and getting voltage drop ,or just blowing a start capacitor thety do go bad, on any motor no mention in a single review about checking that? not impressed with then.

I have 1 saw hitachi c10rjs good lord the review were aweful when i bought it but it really was/is the best bang for buck in terms of features for a (not really portable dd saw), the reviews were universally motor fails, plastic gear on the dewalt type fence fails. Plastic gear was like 3 dollars when i did get sloppy after years and i've ran the piss out of the saw the freaking blade is so dull on that thing from ripping brazillian hard wood, i've ripped that freaking recyled plastic lumber with it WITH all the steel belts in there, i haven't changed the blade in years duller than heck. I overheat it all the time by being too lazy to change the blade lol it's gotta be 6 years year old now. great dd saw but had horrible reviews AND i bought it refurb when bigskytools was still refurbing hitachi for like 199 lol

Would this be a meaningful upgrade from my current 10" skil tablesaw for hobby woodworking?

Main complaint about the Skil is that it can get bogged down on hardwood thicker than 4/4, leaving some burn marks on the wood... Some more infeed and table length wouldn't be missed either.

I bought the Delta version of this saw a few years ago on a SD, I think it was $450 or $499. It looks exactly like this one only Delta black and blue. I can't confirm that the guts are the same, but if they are, fantastic saw. I made all of the trim work in my 1200 sq ft house: jams, stools, casings, aprons for all the windows, trim for every door, trim for the wood ceiling, stair and loft railings, and all of the window and door trim for the exterior windows and doors. I made everything out of ripped down 1x8's, 1x12's, 2x8's, and 2x12's. Not a single hiccup with this saw.

It's "portable" if you are working on a smooth surface like a garage or driveway...I pulled it out of my shed every time I needed it, and it doesn't really roll well on gravel lol. Lots of lifting and shoving.

So ~10 (or 5%) seem to have some kind of defect and that's what's being posted on HD which is going to be the vocal minority, so no that isn't concerning.
