i loved my ts9020. the photo print quality was amazing. all of the ts series printers have pretty good print quality reviews and take up very little space but as far as i understand it, with these newer versions canon has gone out of their way to make using generic ink as miserable or impossible as they can

The only way I would ever recommend an inkjet printer is if you're printing full color documents and photos multiple times a week.
In that case, I would recommend a Epson Eco tank inkjet printer and only that printer.
That's only if you are really against getting laser for some reason because laser is almost always better.

Here's a Canon TS3722 WiFi printer for $39 at Walmart, but doesn't do auto duplexing:

Setting aside hater comments, how are the inks price wise, and are generics available?

I bought a ts6020 because I had a bunch of generic ink leftover from another printer. I figured I'd fill it until it blew up. it never did. It stills works perfect today and my ink still hasn't run out. I even bought those refillable carts but found out that you could just refill those original Canon cartridges as many times as you want.

I've printed off entire color board games with this thing.

Edit: I can't speak about the other Canon models, but the 6020, No restriction chips Other than the fact that it Will Not track the ink levels when you start filling it back up (obviously). It will also tell you when you first do this that it will not track the ink (obviously). I now fill it by weighing the cartridges. Once you overfill and ink starts leaking, yeah, you'll know the correct weight then -lol.

inkjet is a consumable dependency trap - one should never invest in.
most inkjets now incorporate encrypted chips in their cartridges that
are needed to tell the printer it has an "authorized" new cartridge,
thus killing off the potential for generics. HP is famous for this.
you'll have to find out for yourself if Canon plays the same game.

There are valid use cases for both inkjet and laser.

Your response doesn't answer my question regrading ink prices and availability of generics. I very well know pitfalls of inkjets and also laser. I've owned both before.

As another poster said, I am talking about B&W at this price range.

However, a decent color laser is something that can be had for a deal, or purchased used.
If properly maintained, it will likely last for a very long time. It will also cause far less headaches. I can easily see the cost of ownership being less than the several inkjets you would need otherwise.
