So, long story, I was going to Alaska from Fl last year for vacation in a travel trailer and brought this tool along because at a bare minimum, inevitably there will be flat tires. I was somewhere in the remote area of the Alaska highway (either canada or ak) when I stopped for gas and noticed a tire was flat and had to change it. The temp was pretty cold, but not freezing, it was the light rain that made it unpleasant. I changed my tire with ease and pulled to the pump to fill up. I see another guy with a utility trailer pull off the road and begins to change one of his 8 lug tires with a dewalt brushless impact. The entire time I am pumping my 30gals I can hear his dewalt just screaming but barely budging the lugs. I see him dabbing some ATF on the lugs to help once they start moving, but for the 5+ minutes it took me at the pump, he didn't manage to get any lugs off and said only one of them moved a little. I said here, try my ryobi. He snickered a little and I was like, hey it's not going to hurt, give it a shot. When I handed it to him, he was visibly confused as the high torque ryobi is much bigger and heavier than normal. Although it struggled, it got all 8 lugs off where the dewalt wasn't doing anything. His socket was smoking about 30 seconds in, but luckily it was the right size and nothing stripped. This ryobi is truly a step above the rest.

Bought this two years ago on a similar deal. Work on my cars at home, there hasn't been a single bolt or nut it can't tackle, super impressed so far!

This thing is a beast. Well worth the price. It actually makes more power on the 9ah battery, but you probably won't need that much power anyway.

Because these are purchased together, it's not possible to return the battery and charge for a partial refund is it?

At this point I have enough batteries/chargers for home DIY stuff and just need the tool itself.

No, the hack only works on separate items bought together as a combo. In this case, it's one "product" so you can't. You might be better off on Direct tools outlet for it.

While this is a capable tool, so are most DeWalts. If he was unable to remove lug nuts with his there could've been many reasons, such as:
  • older or low-torque model of DeWalt impact
  • using an impact driver instead of impact wrench
  • old, small, or discharged battery
  • using torque-robbing adapters
  • lug nut was overtightened by shop gorilla with big impact
  • lug nut was seized, corroded, or cross threaded

High torque isn't usually necessary for most things on regular consumer vehicles, including lug nuts. The Ridgid, or Ryobi, mid-torque should be plenty.

Even my little 250 ft-lbs rated subcompact Ridgid handles my lug nuts with aplomb. But I should note that my lug nuts are correctly torqued and get removed frequently enough that corrosion isn't a problem, so your mileage may vary.

usually, the mid torque is enough for lug nuts. The assumption is your lug nuts are properly installed and not seized. The common torque number is around 90-120 lbs/ft for wheel and mid torque wrench is 400+ lbs/ft

I bought two of the mid torque Ridgid deal with two batteries and put them in my cars. I got to used it two days ago when my wife ran over some metal piece. So glad I got it, changed her wheel less than 15 minutes.
Sold my Kobalt impact wrench. Since Ridgid batteries will work with my Milwaukee and Makita.
