7 years of guaranteed security & software updates on Pixel 8a vs who knows? on OnePlus 12r?

Pixel 8a > OnePlus 12r.
I know a person with a Pixel XL which was released in 2016 and they are still using it in 2024. So yes, a Pixel can last 7 years or more.
Ew, no. These are two different worlds. One has guaranteed security updates, and the other is a gamble.

I envy people who have good experiences with google Pixel phones. I like the cameras and with older Pixels, I had unlimited phone storages. But my Pixel 4a and 5a, both of them died suddenly (black screen dead), out of warranty. Both phones died within 2 years. Brought them to FixIt (authorized Google repair), they said it's motherboard issues. Watched a bunch of YouTube videos to revive them with no luck.

Pixels force you to play a game as their beta testers, but youre never left in a lurch if you play it properly...

I have two Pixel XLs wit horrendous battery but work wonderfully for unlimited storage.
The 2 XL had some crazy screen burnin within the first year. CC reimbursed me.
The 3a had issues with battery within the first month. After one exchange, no issues. Eventually traded it in for the $300 credit on the 6a when it launched.
The 4a had amazing battery, the best of any pixel that I used. Worked fine until I traded it in towards the 7. Would have kept it longer gladly.
The 4a5g had no issues since the start, and serves as a spare phone.
The 6 pro had issues with its 5g radio and bluetooth radio. I didnt have the fingerprint issues that others had. Took four exchanges to get a decent one. Im holding it in for a trade up to one of the 9s. It is currently my daily driver, along with my work phone (a note 9)
The 7 is currently being used by my wife. Like the 4a, no issues.

All in all, I am happy to test out a new pixel because there is so little risk. they have higher resale/trade value than other android phone brands (besides the galaxy s), and if they break within the second year of usage, my CC has my back with extended warranty. So any bad phones either turn back into credit, or get traded for something better.

I have never paid for, and kept, a phone which was a dud.

Interesting. I had the oneplus one, which lasted me until I bought the 6t,and then that lasted until I bought a used oneplus 9 pro 5g. I think they are great phones, much less bloated than Samsung. Cameras are good, but I've always been curious about the pixels for their cameras. The pixels seem to not hold their value long used, and some people I know have oxmplained about battery life. Battery life on my 9 pro 5g (which was used whne purchased) is not superb. I usually have to hit the charge cable once if I'm using it a lot in a day. But oneplus chargers are really fast.

Edit: forgot to also respond to what you said about customer service. I've really never used them. Was it a long phone wait? Couldn't fix your problem? Like I said I've used a lot of their phones, but I've never actually contacted then that I can think of.
Fedex delivered the phone to the wrong address, totally different city, zip code, street sand house number, clearly showed on Fedex tracking. OnePlus kept saying it is delivered and wanted me to fill a bunch of forms and file a police complaint as if the phone was stolen from my property.

For three weeks I kept getting canned responses, even after being escalated to higher teams. They finally did the right thing after I threatened small claims court and chargeback on my credit card. If a simple issue with proof cannot be resolved quickly, I don't trust them with any support. The phone was supposed to be a Father's Day gift, I ended up buying a Pixel 8a instead. I have gotten much better service from TEMU and Aliexpress than OnePlus.

When I had problems with Apple products, all it took was a few text messages and I got an appointment at the local Apple Store and got my issues fixed. Ofcourse, not expecting that level of service but I don't like companies where their human employees respond like badly trained chatbots.

Has the fingerprint scanner behind the glass gotten any better?
Is there still no headphone jack?

I'm still rockin' a 4a and will continue to do so until Pixel releases something more reliable and smoother to use than what I have now....
I am still using my 4a5g as well, issue is they stopped getting security updates last december and I can't use it for work anymore (my work profile comes with security requirements). It was REALLY nice to have couple work apps on my phone, because I am on call and I could respond to calls from my phone, check details, check email and chat etc. Was hoping a drop in practice for the latest model before model 9 ships would be my solution...

I'm typing this comment on my Pixel 4a. They don't make normal-sized phones like this anymore. Will use as long as I can!

Pixel 8a > OnePlus 12r.
Galaxy s24 ultra > Pixel 8a > OnePlus 12r

Recently got a S24 Ultra for under $700 new with the recent EDU deal plus cash back. Could have been even slicker with 10k Amex points with $1k spend on samsung.com, but I didn't care for galaxy buds or whatever to put me over $1k. Great if you buy 2 phones though.

Got both. Experience dealing with one plus "customer service" was horrible. Never buying OP phone again.
Customer service has nothing to do with the phone itself.

Similarly to Amazon 1 star reviews because they never received the package or package was opened.

Customer service has everything to do with the phone itself. When you buy a phone you expect the brand to provide you good customer service when things go south. A great phone turns into garbage when customer service is like Oneplus.

nope, not the same as those amazon reviews. if OnePlus had did the right thing I wouldn't be complaining. Things go wrong all the time, but how a brand fixes them tells you a lot about them.

also customer service has a lot to do with the phone, if your phone turns out to be a lemon and they don't replace it (or in a timely manner) then you have a bad phone. Much like a restaurent is not just about food, if the server doesn't wash their hands after pooping you wouldn't say "it has nothing to do with food"
